Truck transporting Cambodian garment workers overturns, leaving 33 injured

PHNOM PENH, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- A truck transporting garment factory workers flipped onto its side in southwestern Cambodia's Kampong Speu province on Wednesday morning, leaving 33 workers injured, according to a Labor Ministry statement.

The truck overturned and spilt the workers onto the street when its driver swerved to avoid hitting a dumper truck crossing the road.

"Thirty-three workers got injured, including 12 in serious condition," the statement said, adding that the ill-fated workers had been rushed to nearby clinics and hospitals for medical treatment.

Transporting factory workers in open trucks to and from factories is common in this Southeast Asian country. In May, some 69 garment workers in southeastern Svay Rieng province injured when their truck overturned after hitting a motorbike.

The country's 6-billion-U.S.-dollar garment industry is comprised of some 1,007 factories, employing around 750,000 workers.
