1:40 PM, I have read Mark’s articles (not only regarding Cambodia, but other countries within Southeast Asia) with open mind, but from my understanding all of his articles regarding Asia are negatively attacking Asian as a race.
Unlike you, I am not affiliated to any of the political party in Cambodia, may it be the CPP or the oppositions. And unlike you, I don’t use this opportunity to attack any political party and support any attack on my fellow Cambodians without logic. So when I defend Cambodia, I defend the people NOT the government!
Initially I did not want to waist my time countering Mark’s comments point by point, but now it seemed necessary.
1. “True laziness comes to play when an entire nation can’t get the work – the necessary duties done because they can’t be bothered to get off their soft motorcycle seats”.
Either you are so ignorant that you do not know what is happening in Cambodia or you are so blinded by your anti CPP mind-set that you failed to see Mark’s ignorant logic to justify labeling Cambodian lazy.
Most of these guys on motorcycle seats on the street corners are moto-taxi drivers, rather endlessly drive around looking for customers, they choose a spot that offers them potential customers. The only difference between these guys and the taxi drivers in Western countries is that those in the West can afford to drive around looking for customers, and these Cambodian attempts to save fuel by waiting at a street corner.

Cambodia has only managed to achieve political stability after the event of July 1997; it takes decades to build a country and most importantly requires domestic stability. Political stability is one of the main risk assessments that any foreign investors look at before investing in a country, this is just one of the main reasons why Cambodia failed to get foreign investment in the late 1990s and early 2000s, NOT because Cambodian are lazy as Mark has blindly assumed. Whereas, Vietnam has been stable since the end of the American war (at least domestically) hence they have achieved more to some extent.
3. “You will find countless garment producers, such as Nike or Adidas, or electronics makers, such as Samsung or Siemens in surrounding countries (Vietnam, Malaysia, etc.) but none of them would consider opening a factory in Cambodia?”
While this statement is not true, the counter argument is still valid. NO reasonable company would be dumb enough to set up production line in two neighboring countries, it would defeat the purpose of economy of scale, especially given Cambodia’s small population of under 15 million, and only a fraction of those are potential markets. It is the same logic that multinationals decided to shut their production lines in Western countries and set up in China, it is not due to Westerners being lazy; only fools would accept Mark’s reasons as valid.
4. “Laziness however exists in all walks of life in Cambodia. Kids don’t go to school because they can’t be bothered to learn or do the homeworks. Are you kidding me?” Are you serious? Where did Mark get these so called facts from? Most Cambodian are living in poverty (it is not a proud fact, but true), they’re struggling to earn enough to eat which leads to children not able to go to school; so DO NOT associate kid not able to attend school for laziness!

You are kidding me, Cambodians [living in the Western countries] are so lazy that is why most of the Westerners in the OECD are jealous and accused them of stealing jobs from the locals. That is why they’re driving nice cars, live in luxury houses from working overtime to the envy of the locals who only willing to work 8 hour shift, refuse to stay back, drive a bomb, and live in a shack in their own country.

Good that someone has provided a strong, but thoughtful, rebuttal to Mark's cruel insult of the Khmer people. There are many more points in Mark's article that needed to be rebutted. Hope someone has the time to do that. I wanted too but has no time to do so. We should put Mark into shame by proving him wrong.
Mark is an ignorant fool, I left a rebuttal in the comments section on his webpage, check it out (asher): I hammered him by stating the facts, that Khmers are extremely resilient and hardworking and are achieving the level of progress that only a decade would have seemed impossible - and outted him as a racist imbecile with far too much ignorance and free time on his hands. Nothing but an attention whore.

A large number of Cambodian workers had successfully sought employment in South Korea, making Korea one of the biggest job markets for Cambodian workers. Figures show that 2,645 Cambodian are employed in S. Korea for the first half of 2011. On the same topic the Phnom Penh Post on Friday, 27 January 2012 reported the followings: Large jump in number of workers to Korea! Cambodian migrant workers to South Korea increased by about 135 per cent in 2011, making Cambodian nationals the fourth-biggest migrant worker population in the East Asian country.
The Kingdom sent 4,957 workers to South Korea last year, a large increase on the 2,116 sent the year before… “We had a sharp increase last year”.
Mark, could you tell me if the Koreans do not have business sense by recruiting the laziest people in the world, according to you? And here again on January 25th, 2012 in The Cambodia Daily: Thailand has appealed to Cambodia to send more migrant workers to the country due to a high demand for labor following last year’s devastating floods, while Cambodia has in turn asked that Thailand render the migration process safer, speedier and cheaper! I would ask you the same question again Mark, regarding Thailand request. Are you too lazy to read the papers and doing due diligence before you write your blog? As for investments in Cambodia, if you were really serious about impartiality, you should know that the Kingdom only started to enjoy peace and political stability after 1997, even though Paris Peace Accord was signed in 1991. You should be aware that there were no basic infrastructures left after thirty years of war, no electrical power to even light up the capital city, let alone to run manufactures to produce wells for exportations. Only now when ports, roads and bridged are restored, or built from scratch that international investors can come. We can also read recently in Phnom Penh news papers that between 2006 and 2011; Cambodia’s Special Economic Zones received 96 investment projects worth $1.15 billion, which created jobs for 61,400 workers. But for 2011 alone the CDC approved 39 projects worth US$715.25 million... In Phnom Penh capital city, many leading international corporations have set up their Cambodian operations based at Phnom Penh SEZ. Below please find the latest overview from February 2012. AJINOMOTO (CAMBODIA) Co., Ltd., ATLAS ICE (CAMBODIA) Co., Ltd, CAMBODIAN SUCCESS INDUSTRIES Co., Ltd., CAMBOX PRIVATE Ltd., .., THIBIDI (CAMBODIA) Co., Ltd., MINEBEA (CAMBODIA) Co., Ltd., JAPAN ROCKS S.E.A (PHNOM PENH) Co., Ltd., YAMAHA MOTOR (CAMBODIA) Co. How on earth a nation can set up businesses in that big number in a short period of time if it is really the laziest nation in the world? Mark has the right to his option. I'm actually agreed with a few things he said. The word laziness might not be the word I would use. These Cambodians lack of opportunities, and they are not able to learn to be more creative. I’m not sure by jump the gun and too quick to point finger at the government. However, part of the government corruption is certainly makes it even worse. Percentage of the people has no clued what they are supposed to do with their livelihoods. They are sitting around day dreaming and hoping that their lives are going to be better one day. It’s like dreaming about winning a lottery.
However, there percentage of Cambodians did not allow these dreams to pass by. They know how to work with the incumbent government include kickback and brown nose the offices. They find the back bones to support them where they can do well in the society, even though they are helping to upsurge the culture of corruption within the government.
In order to make a better plain field, the changes must come from government and the reform must come from the people. If the government does not willing to change the corrupted behavior, then the people’s dreams are just dreams. It never will become a reality. This is what happening in Mexico and many places in Central and South America. Those Latin Americans are no different from these Cambodians. When they are living in their own countries, they don’t know what to do with lives, but when they illegally living in the United States, they are the hardest working people. They are willing to do many jobs that Americans don’t want, so that they can support themselves and send some money to their relative back home.

-Mark is generalizing when he mentioned that Cambodia is the laziest nation in the world, but are the facts wrong(?). According the many research and many study, as mentioned above, Cambodia is the most corrupted country in the world, combined with high human trafficking, high crime rate, high unemployment rate, 80% of the land owned by government, over 15 millions hectares of lands are privatized, not to mentioned the former Khmer Rouge leaders installed by the Vietnamese. Lets not make this a political attack. Get my drift..

3 Simple Facts:
1) Cambodia recorded Asia's second highest annual GDP growth (8%) in the decade immediately after the Khmer Rouge finally laid down their weapons, between 1997-2007.
2) In 2012 the US, UK, Japan, France, UK, China, Vietnam, Korea - are all lining up to invest in Cambodia in the fields of oil and natural gas extraction (Gulf of Thailand), power generation (Koh Kong, Kampot), agriculture (all provinces), tourism (Siem Reap-Phnom Penh-Gulf Coast, manufacturing and more.
3) Cambodia has achieve spectacular results across all socioeconomic areas, including but not limited to the following:
- increase in tourist numbers from less than 100,000 international visitors in 2001, to 3.5 million expected this year
- reduction in poverty rate from half to less than a quarter of the population in ten years
- dramatic reduction in HIV transmission rates from having one of the worlds highest rates in 2001, to having almost zero HIV transmission in 2011
- overseas Khmers, Sino-Khmers, Franco-Khmers, Khmericans, Khmaussies are returning home in droves to start businesses, rediscover their heritage
- flourishing of traditional and modern Khmer arts amongst youth including classical dance, bokator, pradal serey, sbek thom
So if Cambodia and Cambodians are so damn lazy, than why is our economy growing faster than the languishing economies of the West, and why are the West so interested in us?
Forecast for GDP growth for Cambodia in 2012? the World Bank says about 7.5%....while at the same time it expects the US to "grow" at about 2%.
So yeah - things are looking very good for Cambodia, at least in the short and long terms.

I am not font of CPP regime and CPP folks who have done the businesses in the heck of their own CPP/Yuon profits and get richer. There are the most corrupted CPP Officials who used military and forces to oppress people and their freedoms of expression.
Why would you admire CPP/Yuon and Hun Sen regime? More than 75 percents of Khmer populations are still living in the poverty.
Why did it take 30 years to develop under the corrupted CPP/Yuon officials and Hun Sen?
Cambodian is better off without those most corrupted CPP Yuon officials and Hun Sen (Viet/Yuon dog).
Be careful that CPP will control the election again and win again in the heck of CPP Yuon propaganda.
We, Khmer people, are not going to vote for CPP and not allowing Yuon/Hanoi to control Khmer again.

Hun Sen dictatorship regime has been in power for over 32 years, during that time he has killed hundreds of opposition parties.
Hun Sen is the worst longest serving Prime Minister, monthly salary of $1300 per month.
Hun Sen has also signed away many territorial lands and sea away to private and his government officials.
Hun Sen has been ruling the country with acts of brutal violence and force eviction.
Should Cambodia have a new leader and new government?

Don't you think yourself who has been Dumb. You are generalizing Khmer people who are dumb. Maybe you were called DUMB in your Yuon/Vietnam society.
The word DUMB when it comes to Khmer cultures. Khmer people are very gentle, very polite, not very rude or afraid of being rude or having bad mouth, patient, quiet, calm, hard working, showing respects, very friendly with pleasant smiles, beautiful inside and outside, and more. All of these characters were regarded by you (Yuon), calling Khmer Dumb. Khmer people don't like to take anything for grants and not aggressive like Yuon or Thai who think about money and business, not giving or working hard to free. Yes, Khmer people have worked hard for no money because they have a good heart and gratitude.
You did not study and learn about Khmer history and cultures.
Khmer people are innocent and afraid. There are many tourists from all over the world think Khmer are very beautiful and amazing, and those tourists always said that Khmer people are very patient and polite, not jumping the conclusion.
There are many Vietnamese folks like in Cambodia and born in Cambodia. They are also Cambodian citizens and they like Khmer, but not really polite, patient, calm, but they are very rude, aggressive, using bad language and so on just like the blogger 16 February 2012 12:02 PM.
That is why the Westerners and the people around the world think Khmer people are rude like the person or blogger 16 February 2012 12:02 PM calling Khmer people DUMB.
For Mark, he will be very educated late, and he should not be misled by someone people like 16 February 2012 12:02 PM or neighbors Viets or Siams, labeling Khmer people DUMB.
In the U.S., we have a lot of bad experiences in University where some Yuon/Vietnamese student attended and local town where the Yuon/Vietnamese folks lived. They kept puting and looking down on Cambodian/Khmer people with no reason, calling them bad language and names, Dumb and more, even bullying as well. The reason is that Vietnamese folks are worried to be around Khmer people in Western Communities, they have very bad reputation and history of Yuon. They don't want the Westerners or Americans to know about their bad history or reputation because of Khmer people around them. There is no reason they felt way. Because they are the ones initially created the problems or causes the real damages to Cambodian/Khmer people who have no intentions to Yuon.
That is the truth. No more lies, no more bad name called or more label on innocent Khmer people.

Not all Khmer people upset with Mark, but some Cambodia people were very sensitive and offended by Mark's generalization on all Cambodian people. Yes, it hurts and it is not fair for Khmer/Cambodian people who have been through so much and they have no access to anything in the Cambodia because of the very bad and corrupted Yuon/CPP regime in Cambodia influenced by Communist Yuon/Vietnam.

You need to get rid of DUMB. Where did you learn word DUMB from? Yuon/Vietnamese society or communities where they called you Dumb Khmer.

Nope, i cant remember when was the last time anyone ever used that word on me. I cant remember when the last time i used it on anyone else other then educated Khmer people in the Kingdom of Wonder.

No, we don't. It sounds suspicious to us when it comes to your question. Again, No. It is not fair. We treat you are Khmer, but behind the computer, we don't know who you are. We are not trading anything. We, Khmer people, are not blind. Khmer people still defend ourselves and not allow this influence and exchange anything. Khmer have been deceived by Yuon's game many times, by borrowing Khmer hands to fight the enemies for Yuon. When we become weak, Yuon take advantage of us Khmer, borrow Khmer hands to kill our own Khmer people when it comes to Yuor's control over Khmer.
Yuon is a very common name to be used for a long time since Yuon betrayed us Khmer and killed us to take land, sea, island, natural resources, and so. It doesn't matter with your silly question.
Again, DUMB word is very different from Yuon.
We make peace with you if you are Khmer or foreigners who understand the long time pain, suffers, devastation, and weakness of Khmer people who have been through so much in the long wars and civil wars. We know leaders who are foreigners (Hun Sen's Hanoi masters) misled and failed the Khmer country.
You can't defend Yuon folks who have no respects for Khmer people, Khmer land, Khmer property, history, cultures, food that Yuon copied everywhere around the world, and so on. Yuon did not give credit to Khmer people from what they took for grants.
We don't need to fight or exchange the message with you. We watch out each other. Khmer people have already given up so much to enemies to Yuon/Viets and Siam/Thai. Now, Yuon and Siam still have bad mouth pieces about Khmer with no reasons from the beginning. Khmer people have the right to defend themselves. That is why Yuon folks (including Siam) do not feel secure when it comes to Khmer people living around in the world and communities.
Just want you to understand where we Khmer people come from.

Long long time ago but it just seems like yesterday,when I was struggling to study English by myself in the 1960.
So frustrated I was then because,heck! I can learn Khmer and French relatively easily why not English! But imagine you try to study English with the old book by yourself! Then I thought hmm!damn English is so hard,I should learn Sanskrit!! Not so bad an idea for a 16 year old young man. That was the first time I got to know Srey Hitopates of Rev.Pang Khatt. Anyway,long story short! I did not learn any Sanskrit from the book because it was a translation. But instead a great deal of lessons about friendship,the trick of destroying friendship,war and peace. Now that I live in the US with still my broken English I keep pursuit Sanskrit but Khmer language is my revered toy!
