Thong Sarath's parents arrested on the way to Vietnam

 

PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) -- Parents of fugitive tycoon Thong Sarath were arrested and brought to Phnom Penh Municipal Court on Monday after being released on bail. 

Thong Chamroeun and Keo Sary were sent to Prey Sar prison after being questioned this morning. 

 They were arrested on Sunday night in Dei Ith commune in Kien Svay district by Phnom Penh police while they were on their way to Vietnam to receive treatment , said their defense lawyer Morn Keo Sivin on Monday.

"Thong Chamroeun has suffered heart disease, so he needs to be sent to Vietnam for emergency treatment," Sivin said, claiming that the arrest of his clients is wrong. 

Phnom Penh judge Ly Sok Leng freed Thong Chamroeun and Keo Sary on bail on 7 February, and claimed that they are having serious health problems. 

The arrest was made after Deputy Prime Minister Sar Kheng, Interior Minister, directly criticized Phnom Penh court for releasing perpetrators after police have worked hard to arrest them, and even though the court has enough evidence to charge them. 

Late last year, the Phnom Penh police arrested Chamroeun and Sary and they were charged by Phnom Penh Municipal Court with possessing illegal weapons after police seized four handguns in their residence during an operation. 

So far their son, Thong Sarath believed to be mastermind in the killing of tycoon Ung Meng Cheu, is still at large.
