Report outlines Cambodia factory risks

Written by Brett Mathews
PHNOM PENH - Further garment manufacturing factories in Cambodia face the risk of collapse due to structural deficiencies according to the preliminary findings of new a new report carried out by the ILO and the International Finance Corporation. The report details the findings of Filipino company ECCI which assessed the structural integrity of nine factories in Cambodia and, among other issues, detailed a lack of "rebar in the ground slabs" – the exact issue which was responsible for a factory collapse at the Takeo province earlier this week which injured a number of workers.
Jill Tucker, chief technical adviser for the International Labor Organisation's (ILO) Better Factories Cambodia program, told local press in Cambodia: "What the report also says is the absence of formal codes and regulations from the Cambodian government may be the primary factor [allowing for poor construction]." "Building construction and design" was identified as a key issue by the soon-to-be-released report.
