PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) – Phnom Penh governor has ordered authorities to continue to dispersing any possible “anarchic” rallies in the Capital.
The order came after anti-riot police forces successfully dispersed the opposition’s rally at the Freedom Park and took full control of the site on Saturday.
The operation drew criticism from the civil society accusing the government for suppressing freedom of expression.
However, Pa Socheatvong, the Phnom Penh governor, justifying the crackdown as necessary measure to normalize the situation after deadly clashes between the police and protesters, killing at least five people.
The governor praised police forces for working together to expel the Cambodia National Rescue Party supporters from the Freedom Park, which was the protest base of the opposition CNRP.
Amid criticism, he argued that the authorities used forces to disperse the protesters because what they did was far beyond the law, and caused public disorders at the Freedom Park and on the streets.
