An author who is a government critic and a radio reporter for an opposition party has gone into hiding after receiving death threats through anonymous telephone calls, reports Radio Free Asia.
The opposition Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) announced on 5th of August 2010 that Pen Puthsphea, reporter for the party's Candle Light Radio Program and author of two examination books, has gone into hiding after receiving death threats from anonymous telephone caller on 19th July 2010.
Mrs. Mu Sochua, an SRP MP, said that Pen Puthsphea went into hiding because he was concerned for his safety after anonymous caller threatened him and told him to stop doing his works.
In mid July 2010, the government banned Pen Puthsphea's two book because its contents were critical of Prime Minister Hun Sen. The opposition SRP said since his books were banned, Pen Puthsphea was under constant surveillance of government agents.
A book seller, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the authority told her to stop selling Pen Puthsphea's books or she will get into troubles. The books cost 1,000 riels (25 cents) each.
Gen. Khieu Sopheak, spokesman for the Interior Ministry, said he had not received any complaint from either Pen Puthsphea or the SRP regarding the death threats, but he called on them to cooperate with the police to catch the culprit.
In 2007, Mr. Tieng Narith, a college professor of political science, was jailed for two years for writing a book critical of Prime Minister Hun Sen. In his book published in 2006 and 2007, he accused Prime Minister Hun Sen of masterminding the 1997 grenade attacks on peaceful protesters that killed 19 and wounded 190 people.
