Three officials from a local NGO in Kampong Cham province were manhandled and wounded by a police gun shot after they went to investigate the illegal imports of banned pigs from Vietnam, reports Radio Free Asia.

Three members of Cambodia Watchdog Association were wounded, arrested and put in jail on 3rd August on charges of extortion when they went to investigate illegal pig imports through Memot border pass in Kampong Cham province.

Mr. Nuon Samin, Kampong Cham Police Commissioner, said the trio tried to extort money from pig importers and police went to intervene and arrested them.

Mr. Nguon Moeun, one of the arrested officials, said before he was taken into custody that he and his colleagues went inquire about the importations of banned pigs in 8 motorbikes and the police car arrived and suddenly started shooting, injuring one person on the hand.

Mr. Ny Chakriya, investigator for human rights group Adhoc, said the arrests of the trio were wrong.

Court officials could not be reached for comment on what charges the trio will face.

Mr. Sa Voeun, a pig farmer from Memot, said he can't compete against these sorts of illegal and cheap imports.

Due to the spread of an unknown blue-eye swine disease which killed hundreds of pigs, Prime Minister Hun Sen has banned the importations of pigs from Vietnam and Thailand and said those who defy the ban will be prosecuted.
