New senator replaces Sihanouk’s daughter

School of Vice

I'm not sure what the roles and functions of these institutions - from the Senate to the Constitutional Council - really are, or what relevance their presence contributes to the political and social life of the nation when even one of its members was unceremoniously sent to prison despite his 'immunity' [from arrest or prosecution] for posting information about the border online.

As for the Princess, one senses that the arts might be a far more worthwhile catalyst for her artistic talents and passion ... Still, what do I know?

Former secretary of state at the Ministry of Environment Khieu Muth on Monday received a unanimous vote appointing him as the Senate’s newest member, filling the seat vacated at the end of April by Princess Norodom Buppha Devi. Sixty-eight parliamentarians from the ruling Cambodian People’s Party voted in Muth’s favour.

“Khieu Muth, one among the six candidates, received [a] unanimous vote today to be member of the Senate as the appointee from the National Assembly,” said assembly spokesman Leng Peng Long.

Buppha Devi – daughter of the late King Norodom Sihanouk – had served in the Senate since 2013 as one of two National Assembly appointees. Senate Secretary-General Um Sarith said Buppha Devi resigned due to a new job. She couldn’t be reached for comment.
