PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) -- The ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) opened a three-day meeting in Phnom Penh on Friday.
The extraordinary congress is being held at Koh Pich, and being presided over by CPP deputy president Hun Sen and Heng Samrin, Honorary Chairman.
The congress is being held on the theme of "Reform is life of the Nation and Cambodia People's Party."
The meeting is expected to rejuvenate the CPP Central Committee with the elevation of younger party members ahead of commune elections in 2017 and national election in 2018.
"It's true that our party is standing in a new turning point in fifth legislature. Even though our party received majority votes from citizens throughout the country, we recognized that we lost many seats in the National Assembly to opposition party," Heng Samrin, said at the opening of the extraordinary meeting.
"For this reason, it requires us to further study about it before thoroughly assessing the weakness, strength and new experiences of the party aiming to push for strong and effective reform," he said.
"In a new political situation, the Cambodian People's Party has nothing other than being committed to its leadership to make it in accordance to special situation in Cambodia to ensure that the party still serves the interest of the national and citizens in all circumstances," Samrin told the meeting.
