The Curse of the House of Norodom

King Sihamoni in his message to his people warns them of the need to avoid past errors in judgement and action that had proved tragic and costly for his nation at a time of heightened political tension. The king, is, however, at the same time, failing to acknowledge his own critical role in contributing to the making and fermenting of this national predicament and dilemma in refusing to act in the best interest of his subjects and to imprint his moral courage or the sense of paternal duty over the nation upon the throne as a fitting and noble royal legacy. Once again Sihamoni has shown just how loyally and unquestioningly he is willing to imbibe his late father's expedient motto of "giving to Caesar what is Caesar's"! The king's message - though not quite partisan or unequivocal  in tone and meaning - echoes depressingly that of Sihanouk's infamous radio broadcast from Beijing when Sihanouk was reputedly forced to read out a script prepared by his Khmer Rouge secretary or minder shortly after the bloodless coup staged against him on 18th March 1970, calling on the Cambodian people to join force with the Khmer Rouge of Pol Pot's faction in their armed bid to overthrow the Lon Nol regime. Sihanouk later boasted of how he always liked to have Khmer Rouge cadres working as his personal secretaries because they were [in his words] so disciplined and methodical; qualities that remind one of Comrade Duch or Kang Kek Iew - director of the notorious Tuol Sleng prison or Security 21 [S21] - School of Vice    

Most Cambodians today remain largely ignorant of their beloved former monarch's political past. Dubbed the 'Red Prince' among other unflattering aliases by some western diplomats, Sihanouk had gone out of his way to endear himself to the likes of Nicolae Ceausescu of Romania, Tito of Yugoslavia as well as Kim Il Sung of North Korea, and, of course, Mao Zedong of China, all of whom had extended their diplomatic recognition to Pol Pot's Democratic Kampuchea and had maintained their respective embassies in Phnom Penh - the nation's capital city minus its pre-war inhabitants - throughout the murderous regime's reign of terror.
