Dear Minister,
The Kingdom of Cambodia
Voting Irregularities
I have concerns with the election process that is currently taking place in Cambodia. I oppose any interference into the voting process and I urge the Canadian Government probe into any Cambodian ‘irregularities’.
I understand Canada’s former deputy prime minister Sheila Copps, was in Cambodia who said, “I’m pleased to see that there was no sense of intimidation or manipulation.” This statement has been used by Prime Minister Hun Sen to legitimize his claim to continued ruling Cambodia over 28 plus years. It is my understanding that she does not have any official capacity with the current Canadian government. I fear her former position as Deputy Prime Minister is being used by the current government add to the legitimization of any potential irregularities.
Meanwhile your counterparts, the United States and European Union have both expressed concern over alleged voting irregularities in the most recent vote. The U.S. has called for a “transparent and full investigation to all credible reports of irregularities.”
I would be grateful if you or one of your colleagues would let me know what representation the Canadian Government has made to the Government of Cambodia, to prevent manipulation of the election result. As well, I would like to respectfully request the Government of Canada to make a public response to the election in Cambodia.
Your Sincerely,
Thy Prak
