Around 23,000 observers to monitor upcoming election

Give our kids a better deal
PHNOM PENH, 15th July (The Cambodia Herald) -- A National Election Committee (NEC) official said up to Tuesday there are already 23,501 observers that have registered to monitor the upcoming election later this month.

Tep Nitha, NEC secretary general, said the observers including 58 international foreigners were from 29 national non-government and 11 international non-government organizations.

He said the numbers of both national and international observers could increase as the NEC is further examining registration requests.

The deadline for the registration of national observers is July 18, while the deadline for international observers is seven days later on July 25.

9.6 million people were registered to vote in the July 28 election. Around 3.5 million of them are young people whose ages are between 18 to 30 years, and some 1.5 million are first-time voters, according to the NEC.
