PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) -- The
newly-pardoned opposition party leader is not able to register to run as
a candidate for the general election taking place later this month, a
National Election Committee (NEC) official said Tuesday.
“Generally,
according to election law that comes into effect, there is no place to
include the name of Sam Rainsy in the election list” Tep Nitha, NEC
secretary general, told CEN, an affiliate of The Cambodia Herald.
He
said Sam Rainsy can register his name when the NEC starts new
registrations as the registrations for the 2013 general election had
ended since December of last year.
“The registration for 2013
election could not be made because the NEC has already validated the
list of voters," he said, adding that the list could not be adjusted,
according to the law.
Sam Rainsy, leader of Cambodia National
Rescue Party (CNRP), was granted royal pardon Friday last week after
Prime Minister Hun Sen sent a letter to King Norodom Sihakmoni on the
same day to seek for his pardon.
Rainsy, who had faced 11 years
in jail after being convicted in absentia in 2009, said Saturday in his
Facebook page that he would return to Cambodia from exile on July 19 to
join his party’s campaign.
Some 40,000 supporters are expected to rally at Phnom Penh International airport to welcome him.
