The Phnom Penh Post
cited data from the Council of the Development of Cambodia as saying
the country exported 146,854 tonnes of milled rice from January to May, a
127% increase year-on-year.
Kim Savuth, president of Khmer Food Co and chairman of the Federation
of Cambodia Rice Exporters, said the increase was a big surprise.
Thailand is an importer of Cambodian rice, but also competes with country on rice exports.
France was the chief buyer of Cambodian rice in the first five months of this year, followed by Poland, Thailand, Malaysia and China, according to figures compiled from exporting firms in Cambodia.

Kim Savuth said he believed that Cambodia rivalled Thailand at exporting rice to other countries, due to their cheaper prices.
"Only Cambodia and Thailand can produce fragrant rice. [But] our
fragrant rice is $100 (3,000 baht) to $150 per tonne cheaper than in
Thailand. That is our potential," the newspaper quoted him as saying.
Cambodia exported 205,717 tonnes of milled rice last year.
