PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) -- The newly-elected President of the Sam Rainsy Party, Kong Korm, appealed to the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the European Union, the countries of Paris Peace Agreement and the United Nations to pressure the Cambodian government to pave way for the safe return of the exiled, Sam Rainsy, before the upcoming elections.

The appeal was made Saturday, during the 16th anniversary commemoration ceremony for the victims killed and injured in the grenade attack on March 1997.

The event was held in front of the former National Assembly site.

Speaking through video conference from France, Sam Rainsy, President of National Rescue Party, said the last 16 years, unidentified suspect(s) threw four grenades into demonstrators who rallied to protest the Court of Justice, killing at least 16 and injuring over hundred others.

He said, the terrorists haven’t been identified yet even though it was 16 years ago. The citizens are still waiting for their arrests.

"I, Sam Rainsy in the name of the victims and their families, am committed to say that this will be the last commemoration that we will hold without receiving justice," he said. "And the situation in 2014 will be different."

Sam Rainsy has been sentenced in absentia to 12 years in prison for uprooting border markings placed by Vietnam, faking public documents and disinformation.

However, Prime Minister said recently, Sam Rainsy's case was not related to political motivation, but criminal charges for uprooting the border markings.

He said, the opposition leader can return to the country to join the election whenever he wanted, but he must face the court if he comes.

The Ministry of Interior dismissed an allegation made by the opposition party that said the government didn’t conduct an investigation to arrest the terrorist.

Khieu Sopheak, spokesman for Ministry of Interior, said, the government cooperated with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to open an investigation after the incident, and that it clearly showed, the charge by opposition parties was not true.

"The investigation was made in  accordance to the procedures, resulted in a draft drawing of the criminal, named Brazil, who later disappeared after hiding in a political party.

"The government and the ruling party are not stupid enough to kill their own citizens, and as the years go by we still regret the deaths of our people," he said.

Sopheak also added, that Sam Rainsy himself, used to send apology letters to the Prime Minister about the false accusations.

Justice cannot be bought or exchanged for the interest of
a person or a political party . Sam Ransi withdrew the law
suit against Hun Sen in exchange for royal pardon . The victims are still waiting for Mr Sam to find justice for them ?
As long as CPP is still ruling Cambodia , the justice is very
very far reaching .

Newly-elected? Who elected him? This loser got elected by a few power-greedy individuals. Hun Sen got the popular supports from the people of Cambodia, he will win again and again and again.

6:54 am, Kong Korm was elected by the party. Hun Sen was not elected by his party, Chea Sim was elected the president of the CPP. Hun Sen only got the PM job because he controlled the guns - military, police, court etc. Hun Sen was not elected by the people, he lost the 1993 election and bullied his way into power sharing then he cheated to win the 1998, 2003 and 2008 elections. He will cheat again this year to win.

Given the free will, the CPP will not elect Hun Sen, they will elect someone else like Sar Kheng or Ke Kim Yan. They allowed Hun Sen to be PM because he threatened them everyday if they don't choose him.
