BANGKOK, 8 January 2013 - Senator Somchai Sawangkarn has urged the Prime Minister to consider a move toward resolving the tension over the Thai-Cambodian border as 80 armed Cambodian soldiers have been reportedly deployed to areas near Surin province.

Speaking to the senate meeting today,Mr Somchai, in his capacity as member of the foreign affairs committee, said the appearance of armed soldiers posed a threat to the lives of residents living along the border. The Cambodian troops were said to have been sighted on Monday walking to Plod-tang and Krating-long border points opposite Kab Choeng district, Surin province.

He went on to say that the government must declare its stance given the current scenario, adding that whatever the government approach is, it must be for the benefit of the nation.

The Senator also urged the government to take advantage of Thailand’s good relations with Cambodia in seeking an effective solution to the demarcation feud and to preserve the ownership rights to the disputed land.
