1/11/2013: Sixteen-year-old Chin Heng lives with his grandmother in the suburbs of the Phnom Penh, .
Born in Thailand, where his parents worked as illegal immigrants at a
local sea-shrimp farm, Chin was sent to his grandmother in Cambodia
because his parents were too poor to care for him.
Chin's grandmother was a widow who was unable to work. While she used
to receive support from her children, and also raised fowls to make
extra money, after the birth of Chin’s brother his parents were unable
to send her the money she needed. Even though they lived in a modern
city, their living conditions were far from modern. They used kerosene
lamps for light, and water from borehole which was often dirty. They
didn’t have electricity or fresh running water. Chin’s grandmother had a
tough time looking after him, especially with the rising living costs
of the Phnom Penh city area. Read more at SOS Children's villages.
