Cambodia marks Constitution Day [Does the constitution mean anything to the CPP and Hun Sen?]

PHNOM PENH, 24 September 2012 (Cambodia Herald) - A senior member of the ruling Cambodian People's Party said Monday that democracy and respect for human rights in Cambodia had improved when compared with other countries.

The remarks by CPP Politburo member Cheam Yeap, who is also a senior member of the National Assemebly, coincided with the 19th anniversary of the Constitution.

Nhiek Bun Chhay, executive president of the royalist Funcinpec Party, said the government was trying hard to improve democracy in Cambodia. "The elections are conducted in a free and democratic process," he added.

But opposition Sam Rainsy Party spokesman Yim Sovan said land seizures without proper compensation and a culture of impunity persisted in Cambodia. He also questioned the independence of judicial and electoral institutions.
