PHNOM PENH, 28 June 2012 (Cambodia Herald) - Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) Honorary Chairman Heng Samrin announced the party's renewed support Thursday for Hun Sen as candidate for prime minister after next year's elections.

"The party supports Prime Minister Hun Sen's candidature for the fifth and next legislature," he told a ceremony marking the 61st anniversary of the party's foundation.

Heng Samrin, also president of the National Assembly, noted that the former Khmer People's Revolutionary Party was founded on June 28, 1951, in the struggle for independence.

He said the anniversary celebrated the deep gratitude to those who struggled and made brave sacrifices for independence, peace, freedom, territory and development.

Despite upheavals over the past 61 years, Heng Samrin said the party never gave up its ideals and was the sole power capable of overthrowing the Pol Pot regime in 1979.

After the regime collapsed, he said, the reconstituted party restored and rebuilt the country from scratch despite serious economic sanctions by many foreign countries.

During the first six months of 2012, Heng Samrin said Cambodia had accomplished much. International financial institutions had noted the country's strong economic growth and Cambodia had chaired an ASEAN summit, reflecting its capacity to help solve regional and international issues.

He said the five factors leading the party to victory were its correct policies, capable membership, strong unity, popular support and effective use of financial resources.

"We have to try harder to strengthen further our solidarity with the government led by Prime Minister Hun Sen," the honorary party chairman said.

He also stressed the need to "overcome all obstacles in maintaining peace, stability, security, order and expanding national defense for citizens to promote freedom, democracy, state law and social justice."

On behalf of party chairman Chea Sim and deputy chairman Hun Sen, Heng Samrin expressed the party's thanks to citizens across the country who cast their votes for the CPP.

He said the party also commended the National Election Committee and provincial commissions for ensuring the success of recent commune elections.
