BANGKOK, 30 April 2012: Cambodia’s tourist arrivals almost reached 1
million at the end of the first quarter and resulted in a substantial
increase of around 30% over the same period last year.
Tourists from Thailand rebounded after the Yingluck administration
established better diplomatic relations with Prime Minister Hun Sen.
Visits leaped 64% during the first three months of this year moving the
Thai market to seventh place, up from the eighth at the end of 2011.
The Ministry of Tourism reported the country welcomed 995,210
international tourists during the first three months, representing an
impressive growth of 27.8%.
During January to March, 51.6% (513,756)
of all international visitors arrived by air. Siem Reap took the much
greater share, 32.8% (326,348), while Phnom Penh Airport received 18.8%
(187,408).
Siem Reap welcomed 639,874 tourists, or 64.3% of the total, improving
46.8%. Meanwhile, Phnom Penh and other destinations only tallied
355,336 tourists with a small improvement of 3.7% over the same period
of 2011.
None of its key market showed declines. The top international travel
supplier, was neighbouring Vietnam with 178,967 tourists, an increase of
36.8% followed by Korea supplying 151,233, up 40.7%.
Besides Thailand, countries in the top 10 list, included neighbouring
Laos, which also recorded skyrocketed performance at 88% (49,348).
Arrivals from Russia also continue to grow recording a 49.6% (37,123)
rise from January to March.
In term of regions, Asia and the Pacific recorded the strongest
growth of 33.6% (704,195) followed by the Middle East, 24% (3,750); the
Americas, 18.6% (78,402); Europe, 14.8% (207,460) and Africa, -9.9%
(1,403).
In addition, trips by Cambodians reached 188,267, a 37.1% rise over
the same period last year.
