Prime Minister Hun Sen (pictured) has declared that military confrontations a long the borders between Cambodian and Thai troops will not lead to armed clashes along the Preah Vihear border areas because Cambodia has a plan to peacefully negotiate to end the border conflict with Thailand, reports RFA.

Speaking during a graduation ceremony at Build Bright University on Wednesday, Mr. Hun Sen told the Cambodian people who live along the borders not to worry that there might be a war with Thailand. He said Cambodian troops have a duty to defend Cambodian territory, but will not invade any Thai territories.

Mr. Hun Sen's speech came at a time when there are reports from the borders that there are heightened tensions after Thailand allegedly reinforced 2,000 troops to the border areas near Preah Vihear temple.

In response to Mr. Hun Sen's reconciliatory tones, the Thai Deputy PM, Mr. Suthep Thaugsaban, offered to go to Phnom Penh and hold border negotiation with Mr. Hun Sen. Mr. Hun Sen has not said he will personally meet with Mr. Thaugsuban, but the Cambodian Foreign Ministry said Deputy PM Hor Namhong is ready to meet Mr. Suthep if he is authorised by the Thai PM to talk with Cambodia.

However, the Bangkok Post reported today that Thai PM Abhisit Vejjajiva had dropped the proposal for talks, claiming there is no positive signs from Cambodia.
