REUTERS/Print Samrang/PoolPhnom Penh (dpa) - The bail hearing for former Khmer Rouge foreign minister Ieng Sary was scheduled to resume Wednesday, with arguments expected to centre on whether he should be facing trial at all.
Lawyers for the 82-year-old are expected to contest whether a 1996 pardon for genocide by former king Norodom Sihanouk makes it impossible for the joint UN-Cambodian tribunal to charge him with crimes against humanity and war crimes.
Sary's wife Ieng Thirith, former head of state Khieu Samphan, chief ideologist Nuon Chea and former Toul Sleng torture centre director Kaing Guek Eav, aka Duch, are the other four former leaders currently in detention.
Appeals by members of this group against pre-trial detention were dismissed, but Sary's arguments are entering the third day.
Hearings are expected to get underway later this year.
