Cambodia wishes to see peace, stability in Korean peninsula

PHNOM PENH, March 17 (Xinhua) -- Cambodian deputy prime minister and foreign minister Hor Namhong said Thursday that his country wishes to see peace, stability and security in the Korean peninsula, urging all parties to find peaceful solutions to the dispute, a spokesman said.

The top diplomat made the remarks during a meeting with outgoing ambassador of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to Cambodia Hong Ki Choi, Cambodian foreign ministry spokesman Chum Sounry told reporters after the meeting.

"The deputy prime minister told the ambassador that the building of mutual confidence between the two Korean countries is a very important factor to improve relations between the two fraternal countries," he said.

"He also calls on all parties to exercise their utmost constraints to avoid confrontation or worse tension in the Korean peninsula," the spokesman added.

Hor Namhong also encouraged the DPRK to resume the long-stalled six-party talks, saying that the talks will be a good opportunity for the DPRK to negotiate equally with the five countries involved in the talks and to clearly express its stance in order to find solutions to the dispute.

In the meeting, Hong Ki Choi informed Hor Namhong that Kim Yong Nam, chairman of the Presidium of the DPRK's Supreme People's Assembly, wanted to visit Cambodia and also invited Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen to visit the DPRK.

Hor Namhong said Cambodia will consider appropriate times for the proposed visits in the future.
