Baby boy ‘killed by father’ in Tbong Khmum

A drunken Tbong Khmum province father allegedly smashed his 2-month-old son headfirst into the floor of his home on Tuesday night after becoming consumed by suspicion the baby might not be his, according to local police.

The father, 20-year-old Ork Channa, lived with his 18-year-old wife Chan Nary and their son, Rom Channit, in the village of Chher Klem in Tbong Khmum’s Memot district, according to district deputy police chief Chan Dul.

Dul said Channa had been charged with intentional murder by judicial police and was transferred to Tbong Khmum Provincial Court yesterday following his confession.

“He insulted his wife and killed their baby with his own hands because he was heavily drunk,” said Dul.

Baby Channit’s mother, Nary, said that she and her husband had argued earlier in the day over neighbours’ near-daily visits to their newborn baby. Following the argument, he went out drinking, returning home at 7pm.

“When he arrived home, he began insulting me loudly, accusing me of having a secret affair,” said Nary. “Then he rushed to grab the legs of our baby sleeping in the hammock and threw him against the ground, saying he is not his baby. The baby died immediately.”

Nary added that she and Channa had been in love and defied their parents by eloping, returning home when she fell pregnant with their son.
