Wearing stunning metallic Khmer dresses, the domestic-violence survivors in photographer Mona Simon’s exhibition Dignity project an impression of beauty and “humble strength beyond the suffering”.
On display now at 1961 Coworking and Art Space and supported by gender-equality NGO CEDAW, the exhibition includes the women’s stories alongside their photos on canvas to raise awareness of domestic violence and highlight gaps in existing domestic-violence law.
“The project aims to show a different perspective to the survivors, the perpetrators, the communities and authorities, and to society, which hopefully grows in its awareness and becomes more caring and responsible towards one another,” Simon said in an artist’s statement. The exhibition will conclude on March 8 – International Women’s Day.
