The Philippines is on the brink of elimination in the Southeast Asian Games football tournament after yielding a 3-1 result to Cambodia on Wednesday at Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore.
The Under-23 Azkals suffered their second straight defeat after falling to the host country in their debut on Monday.
“We played a very poor first half and a very good second half. We have to play strong for 90 minutes,” said Philipines coach Marlon Maro. “If we had finished things off with the chances that we had, we could have at least one point (with a draw) tonight.”
Cambodia, which also defeated the Philippines in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-23 qualifiers last March, struck early, taking a 2-nil lead at halftime.
The U-23 Azkals tried to mount a rally, scoring early in the second half on a Paolo Salenga goal.
But Cham Vanathaka put the nail on the coffin with a score at the 81st minute for Cambodia.
Despite the defeat, Maro remained optimistic that the team could stave off elimination with two more assignments left.
“But we must win our last two matches against Myanmar and Indonesia or we go home early,” the coach said. —JST, GMA News
