PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) -- Police in southern and central Vietnam have arrested more than 1,000 people for taking part in anti-Chinese riots in recent days, Thanh Nien reported Friday.
The Vietnamese newspaper said police in Binh Duong province near Ho Chi Minh City had arrested 950 people for industrial park rioting on Tuesday and Wednesday.
In neighbouring Dong Nai province, the report said a further 302 people were arrested for arson, looting and inciting riots in industrial parks.
In Ha Tinh province in central Vietnam, another 76 people were arrested following a brawl at a Taiwanese steel mill that left a Chinese worker dead and 149 other people injured.
The riot occurred at a steel plant owned by Taiwan’s Formosa Plastics Group and followed protests against a Chinese oil rig positioned in Vietnamese territorial waters.
