Cambodia and Vietnam move to improve ties

An estimated 1-2 million Vietnamese people live in Cambodia, but no official figures exist.

When I was a teenager, I was very poor and worked as a laborer with 3 other Cambodians. One old man was a former teacher in Cambodia. He said his day was numbered under the Khmer Rouges.

He prepared a rope to hang himself if Angka would ask him to go after 6 PM. He rather hang himself so that his family would have a body to bury than dying then getting dumped somewhere.

He thanked Vietnam for getting rid of Khmer Rouges, thus saved his life. But he lamented, "They stayed too long and tried to take over Cambodia." Then I asked him 2 questions:

1. "Yeah, 10 years were a bit long. But if Vietnam withdrew immediately, Khmer Rouges would come back. How long should they stay, 1 year?"

He thought for a moment, "I don't know."

2. "For the safety of the people, you don't just come and go. Perhaps it's a good idea to stay a little extra long to be sure?"

He did not answer my second question.

The Whites discovered my talent and lifted me out of poverty. Within two years after I left the labor team, I started to represent my school to compete academically. My learning rate was 100 times faster than any Khmer I met.

You folks kept making nonsense accusation about the million Vietnamese immigrants coming to Cambodia. I have already checked. It's a total lie.

The Vietnamese do not want to come to Cambodia, a poorer country where the people are hostile. The only ways Vietnam government can make them to come to Cambodia are:

1. Force them. They would protest, sneak back. It will be riots. I asked around, check website. It's all quiet on Vietnam side.

Just imagine one day Cambodia wants to deploy some people from Phnom Penh to live at the frontiers. The Cambodians will resist. It's not going to be quiet.

2. Vietnam government bribed them with some incentives. I looked at the folks on Tonle Sap. They are even poorer than the local Cambodians. They are the poorest of the poors.

Khmer folks claimed a Khmer king married a Vietnamese princess, and foolishly allowed the Vietnamese refugees to settle in Khmer Krom. But I checked the history. At the time, the Vietnamese side had very few number. The Nguyen Lord were fighting against the much more numerous Trinh Lord (5 to 1 advantage). When you are so outnumbered, don't you need all keep all your people to fight the Northern enemy?

Further more, the Khmer Krom (Mekong delta) was a salty marsh land. It was form in hundred thousand of years from the silt trapped by the mangroves. It will take a lot of hard work and years to wash away the salt. The was the work done by the Ming soldiers who fled from the Qing empire.

Sure, later on, the Ming's children wanted to join Vietnam and became Vietnamese. To say Vietnam tricked Cambodia with immigration was just a blatant lie.
