Cambodian Main Opposition Leader Sam Rainsey |
What Sam Rainsey has pleaded for help from China, echoes King Ang Duong's desperate appeal to France and other European powers to help Khmer from imminent threat of its two powerful neighbors--Vietnam and Thailand in the past. Almost 200 years later, today Cambodia has faced the same threat from the same enemies though Thailand's influence had totally wiped out since the French colonial time, instead Vietnam's influence has been rapidly growing especially from 1979 when it sent troops to invade Cambodia and installed its puppet regime to rule the country until today.

Chinese President Xing Jiping |
Historically, Thailand patronage system in Cambodia over a century had encountered Vietnam's threat effectively. Khmer kings usually used Thailand's influence against Vietnam or vice versa. Now since Thailand is no longer a power player in Cambodia, Khmer leaders should seek a counter balance of power to thwart the Vietnamese neocolonizer. Now China is more likely the best match against the Vietnamese growing power over Indochina and Southeast Asia. This time is probably the final conquest of Hanoi if Khmer leaders can't find helpers on time, for Vietnam has its effective collaborator, Hun Sen, to coordinate its modus operandi of colonization.
What Sam Rainsey has called for help from China is a legitimate appeal since Cambodia is facing an imminent threat on her independence and sovereignty. Currently, Cambodia looks as if a drowned person, she must struggle to catch whatever that can lift her from drowning. Albeit Sam Rainsey has different political ideology from Chinese leaders, the main point is when the two countries share a common interest. President Franklin Roosevelt made an alliance with Stalin to defeat Hitler in WWII when he saw Hitler more dangerous than Stalin. Now Sam Rainsey may seek alliance with China, for it looks less dangerous than Vietnam.

Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang |
Hun Sen's superficial alliance with China has politically benefited Vietnam too, for it can manipulate international community that Hun Sen is independent and free from Hanoi's pressure to exercise his own foreign policy, therefore Vietnam has nothing to do with what has been going on in Cambodia. Most foreign media as well as some diplomats regarded Hun Sen as if China's stooge rather than Hanoi's when he had brazenly deleted a South China Sea dispute issue from ASEAN's summit agenda in 2012 to appease China. Although Philippines strongly criticized Hun Sen's action, Vietnam--a fierce rival with China--refrained from criticizing Hun Sen publicly because it had struck a deal with Hun Sen behind a scene. Yet, Hun Sen kept China happy for a while when there is no guarantee in the future.
Then China has to swallow a reality. A recent exchanged visits of Japanese Hawki Prime Minister Shinzo Abe--another bitter rival with Beijing--to Phnom penh and Hun Sen to Tokyo along with Japanese warship's visit at Cambodian sea port made China a bit upset and suspicious about Hun Sen's loyalty. Furthermore, Chinese warship was never allowed to stop over at Cambodian sea port, and Hun Sen never let Chinese military personnel to join military exercise with their Cambodian counterparts even though Hun Sen has received large military aids from China over the past twenty years; instead he chose military cooperation with U.S. and Australia before he ordered to suspend it due to post-election crisis which created a high probability for military coup against his rule. All Hun Sen's actions seemed a covertly designed policy by Hanoi to thwart China's influence in Cambodia.
In economic front, despite China is the largest investor in Cambodia fallowed by South Korea and Vietnam respectively, usually Vietnam receives first priority or first grade investment in the country. Vietnamese companies and its de facto company, Sokimex owned by Tycoon Sok Kong, were granted more lucrative and valuable places to invest: Angkor Wat, the symbol of Khmer soul and identity, Borko Resort, the heart of Khmer nation, Prey Land, the largest natural forest in the country, and most rubber plantations over 100,000 hectares stretching from Mondol Kiri to Preas Vihear Province-- a big cash cow for Cambodian economy-- were controlled by at least 18 Vietnamese companies. All these special investment sectors have become the backbones of the Vietnamese economic power in Cambodia.
Despite Beijing may perceive that Hanoi has pushed Hun Sen to play unfaithful game with it, Sam Rainsey is still in an unfavorable position to convince China to support him. First, he is not officially a head of state or government; second, he has different political ideology from Chinese leaders; third, he did not give enough assurance that he is a future faithful China's ally either. However, If Sam Rainsey is seriously seeking relationship or strategic ally with China, It certainly will happen when CNRP get a chance to rule the country. Or a chance is still more likely to happen though he is not in power if Sam Rainsey openly shows his support all China major foreign policies regarding to one China policy involving with Taiwan, South and East China Sea disputes, and China's rightful claim over Tibet along with protection China investment properties in Cambodia.
Furthermore, Sam Rainsey or CNRP's officials must seek formal talks with Chinese diplomats from low level on to build mutual trust and search for more common ground. If Sam Rainsey can lure China to stand behind him, a mission to rescue Khmer nation will be more promising than the past when he solely has relied on the Western countries which, has produced fruitless result over the past 20 years since they hesitated to do thing that they should do. Many human rights groups and others have always criticized the Western powers who have been standing passive with the Hun Sen regime that has brazenly violated democratic principle, human rights and the rule of law that Hun Sen and his boss, Hanoi, had signed the Paris Peace Accord in 1991.
Historically, Vietnam's aggression toward Cambodia was encountered with its rival, Thailand, and then was thwarted by the French colonizer. But now Cambodia has no real protectors while Vietnam even has its more effective collaborator, Hun Sen, to help speed up its colonization process. Hun Sen's superficial alliance with China and Vietnam de facto patronage over Hun Sen will lead to destruction some days, as China and Vietnam are on a verge of armed conflict. When it happens, it will create an opportunity for Cambodia's survival again as the French had done for Cambodia in 1863.

curious about CNRP policies...question: do you happen to know what they plan to do should they get the power to run the country.. would they kick all the vietnamese investors out ? will they refund them their money back ? if not, would it not set a bad example to other countries which want to invest in the future..for example that they/investors could lose money if another political party should win the next election round if that said political party is hostile toward their country etc...?
I am second with Raingsy. CHINA Is second superpower trailing USA.American has nothing to do with Cambodia because of its strategic point. VIETNAM has lots to offer to American Camranh base big and better faster to middle east.Cambidia is a tiny shit country as said by Lydon Johnsom during the 60's. Please all khmer stop thinking that American will help cambodia freeing from Vietnam.Cambodia is not a jewish state nor having anything to attract American interest. China is the only country in the region to deter Vietnam grand plan for sub region CLV .
11:52 I agree with you!! whoever can help us better we have to try or we die. The West is so so over 20 years.
11:52: I support your idea. Western countries are unstable ally and poor.
In this 2014, China become a 1st economic superpower in the world. China recently did alot of reform esp. On corruption.
No matter what, the US will supports Vietnam. Therefore, if China choose CNRP,china will get a good pressure on Hanoi. NO WORRY THAT China stop helping us after its issue (Island) was solved with Hanoi. BECAUSE China now day want to build it's credit in the region as well as in the world. China will do whatever they can to protect its ally. The best option is to send a clear message to China that. CAMBODIA WILL Support China policies, but will choose democracy pattern as China allow it's Hong Kong people to chose the way they live.
I believe... If Cambodia support China, Cambodia will be freed from Hanoi colony ambition.
From the US!
There is a wisdom, "When in doubt, do nothing."
To me, if you do nothing, you still have the choice to do something. If you commit to do something, such as, siding, support with China, you cannot undo it. It is unwise to show hand when the situation is not clear, not favorable.
If you are forced to support China, you are so limited to your only choice left, it indicates you are in a very weak, desperate position. Perhaps you are a weak leader.
-Drgunzet-
P.S. Mr. Hun Sen always has choices, and he makes the choice for his (and Cambodia's) best gain.
Note this, in 2012, Mr. Hun Sen did not commit to China. He merely used the ASEAN chairman position to prevent ASEAN bloc from unifying together against China. But he never declared, "I support China over the claim of xyz."
That was a mark of a superb politician. He can always retreat from that position for a new deal. From such little support, Mr. Hun Sen was able to extract a lot of economic support from China. Basically he only showed indirectly support for China, for one year for so much economic gain.
I say that's a very good deal.
Why side with someone that are 1000000 mile from you when the one that are old friend for eternity already that are next to you. Will be stupid if you ruin that relationship. Plus china is not going to melt and disappear anytime soon and we don't want china to melt either. I don't depend or trust ASEAN either. cus ASEAN seems like Christian and Muslim tools to wipe Asian and other religion in that area while benefit whites and Australia like the colonial era.let melt the yuon.
The leader of the opposition is OLD, he is desperate and will do and say anything in order to be prime minister. I can picture him at night crying and saying…I don’t have a lot of time left, Hun Sen is ruining everything, I want to be prime minister so much, I will sell my soul, my people, my country just to be prime minister for one day. LOL.
@4:48 comment.
Hehehe, very funny.
I think if Mr. Hun Sen is allowed to run unscathed for another 5 years, each year pushing Cambodia up by 7 percent, he will be invincible. With a good statistic and result, he will start to stamp down some corruption.
By then corruption will reduce a lot by itself:
1. Corrupted officials have enough, they will not be as vicious.
2. Corrupted officials will have more to lose, they would not dare to risk more corruption.
For the country to be well off, the base has to come from the people. Mr. Hun Sen needs more jobs for the people. That's why he wanted to keep the wage down to attract more investment.
It's too bad, the people are not having enough relief. There are someone jacking up the food prices making the people's lives difficult.
I recommend to go after those greedy evils. Continue to bring more jobs. Over time, things will solve itself. Do not fight. Fighting will scare off investors and the people will suffer more.
-Drgunzet-
P.S. At sometime, Mr. Hun Sen will let Hun Manet to replace him. Hun Manet is so clean, I do not see any opposition leader can challenge Hun Manet.
Haha....
The US doesn't support bloody hands. Therefore, the US won't support Hun Sen. China, on the other hand, won't support Hun Sen either. Hun Sen is not a trustable friend for China. No matter what, China won't let Hun Sen stay in power until 2023.
Hun Sen must follow it's boss, Vietnam in order to survive in this moment.
However, how can Hun Sen alive as Hun Sen is the enemy of both two main superpowers?
No matter what, Hun Sen must follow or persuade the US to support him, but it is too late.
Now, Hun Sen has faced a big problem.
USA needs to contain China, so USA will support Vietnam to poach away Cambodia from China.
China is coveting Thailand away from USA. Thailand is more important to China than Cambodia. So, unless Cambodia wants to be at the bottom of China-Thailand-Cambodia pole, then go with China.
-Drgunzet-
China has been coveting Thailand away from USA and have mostly succeeded. Currently China and Thailand has a deal to design a whole new serious of land-based Multiple Rocket Launcher and Rockets. You know those weapons are for potential fight against Cambodia right? Two years ago, Thailand got bloody noses from Cambodia's BM-21 rocket systems (supplied by Vietnam). (If you guys want, I can explain you the military warfare...)
China is also in talk with Thailand to make a grand canal to link the Gulf of Thailand with Bay of Bengal. It is to reduce China's vulnerability through the straight of Malacca.
So, the question here is, will Cambodia continue to contest with Thailand or not. Will Cambodia lean Thailand to contest against Vietnam?
What is next to contest with Thailand after Preah Vihear? Oil. Cambodia has overlapping in the sea claim against both Thailand and Vietnam. But the area overlapping with Thailand has already shown known nearby Thai oil fields. The area overlapping with Vietnam had no oil, not it has any geological structure to contain oil. (You need pockets, gaps to trap oil.)
If Mr. Hun Sen decides to contest for oil, he must lean Vietnam to fight Thailand. And China will favor Thailand over Cambodia because Thailand hold more interest for China.
-Drgunzet-
P.S. I read a lot and I am a very smart Asian.
Some idiot people here thinks Hun Manith can be a trustable leader ? Are you kidding me?
Hun manith has a clean hand ?
He just ordered his bodyguards to kill factory workers.
Another reason is that no matter who comes from CPP members, people won't vote for CPP anymore if CPP cannot solve three things. One is corruption. Second is sovereignty. Third is improvement of Cambodian life qualities.
How does Hun sen can reduce corruption? He need money to feed his bodyguards. The only way he can do is to sell Cambodian land to Vietnamese companies.
Even though Japanese PM tried to help him for the reason that Hun Sen will help Japan in the island conflict, Japan cannot persuade it's own people to invest into Cambodia much to satisfy the need of investment in Cambodia.
EU won't support Hun Sen either.
The question is how long is Vietnam able to support Hun Sen regime ?
Hun Sen must choose two options.
One is to put Cambodia to be the second North Korea countries, supported by poor country like Vietnam, which is threatened by war from China almost everyday.
Second is to share powers to CNRP for a temporary survival in the politic in Cambodia. No matter what, China won't satisfy Hun Sen to stay in Power for a long time unless Hun Sen sell oil investment to China. However, Vietnam won't be happy as the China has oil investment close to its conflict region with China.
Overall, Hun Sen now is the enemy to both China and the US. Even though now the US gave less pressure to Hun Sen, the core and fundamental of the US is democracy. When the time comes, the US will choose to kick Hun Sen out.
You know why recently, Hun Sen is like a turtle ?
Hun sen is afraid of China.
Hun sen is afraid of China the most, then EU, and the last is the US.
Bunch of idiot know nothing about real politic and world order.
To help Cambodia from Vietnamese colony, the only wish is to wish China be prosperous.
I don't believe China will kill khmer as it indirectly supported Khmer Rouge from 1970 to 1979. It was a Chinese wrong belief.
For sure, Hun Sen will choose to make a three countries into one as the Ho Chi Minh wished because it is the only way that can keep Hun Sen stay in power. As Vietnam grow stronger, CPP will be stronger too.
Overall, he will choose to be a traitor in khmer history in order to stay in power.
In fact, even Myanmar, long time ally of China bolted away from China 2 years ago.
Myanmar was so poor and exploited so much by China. When the West stopped to embargo Myanmar, Myanmar bolted from China's influence.
Anyone who wanted to enter China's sphere of influence must be out of their mind. Look at Pakistan, another few China's ally. Pakistan is going down.
Pakistan's textile industry has been much destroyed by the lack of electricity. (You folks should do a google "Pakistan textile electricity shortage".) In contrast, Cambodia's garment industry has good electricity supply from Vietnam.
Vietnam is willing to help Cambodia with the garment industry so that they can control some influence over Cambodia. Otherwise, why help Cambodia, why not take more garment jobs for yourself.
Sometime you need to share, so that you can control later. Vietnam is poor, they are forced to be clever to compensate for the lack of economic wealth. And they still have to pull their guts out to build things in Cambodia to gain favor, such as the big hospital in Phnom Penh. Vietnam is giving out their best medical expertise to appease Cambodia.
That's the current tug-o-war between Vietnam and China over Cambodia.
-Drgunzet-
Mr. Hun Sen once said, "China is the root of everything evil" for China's continue support of Pol Pot prolonging the civil war.

You think Mr. Hun Sen was ever really pro-China? Think again.
-Drgunzet-
The question should ask, does merge into three country federal, it is the only way that Cambodia should do?
No Indochina Federation, never ever with 90 million Viet when we have 15 millions and Laos 6 millions.
Who would trust Sam Ransy?
US, China and France none of these 3 won't trust him. He has no credit. In 1970-1975 did he came to help US? What have he done for Cambodia? Not a good things and not a to bad things.
Trust or not, it depends on people. I believe Sam Raingsy is now the only hope for Khmers in majority. Only some people that don't trust Sam Raingsy.
