In Long Beach, New Opposition Seeks Support

Sophinarath CheangVOA Khmer
LONG BEACH - Cambodians who go to the polls for July’s parliamentary elections will face two major choices, the ruling Cambodian People’s Party, and the new opposition, the Cambodia National Rescue Party.

The new opposition represents a combination of two former party leaders, Sam Rainsy and Kem Sokha, both of whom were in Long Beach earlier this month, looking for funding and support ahead of the election.

This California city is not known for an abundance of political participation by its Cambodian residents. But community organizer Tith Tippana hopes to change that for the Rescue Party.

Kem Sokha (L) Vice-President of the opposition CNRP and Sam Rainsy (R), President of the opposition CNRP.

In an interview with VOA Khmer at his Long Beach home, he said the hard part was convincing Cambodian-Americans here that the two opposition leaders share the same goals.

“The difficulty is that, primarily, Cambodians think we have two different paths—but actually these two paths have only one purpose, which is change,” he said. “So the difficulty is to combine the two leaders.”

Tith Tippana recently hosted a meeting between the two opposition leaders and more than 700 residents in a Long Beach banquet hall. Nearly 300 people had to be turned away, he said.

That’s a lot of participation from the largest Cambodian-American community in the United States, which could help allay the concerns of other, smaller communities, he said.

“Long Beach is a place for our fellow Cambodians to learn from one another,” he said. “So on the political stage, if Long Beach residents are involved, the world will be involved as well.”

Tith Tippana said that the joining of the two parties will help in the upcoming election in Cambodia, where the Rescue Party will run against the ruling Cambodian People’s Party for parliamentary seats and the premiership.

Long Beach supporters raised just $20,000. But Tith Tippana said he senses a change for this election, which he called a turning point for Cambodia.

“Cambodians are not stupid anymore,” he said. “They must have seen something, that’s why the came. Now they have hope, they listen to news. They’ve seen that, oh, the CNRP is a real party that can compete with the current party.”

Have to be careful with this system. This is also a very dangerous game for our country democracy.

In case the Cambodian descents with dual citizenships are able to vote for the Cambodian General election.
The Vietnamese descents live in Cambodia, very sure have a dual citizenships “Cambodian and also Vietnamese,” they will then also able to vote not just for the Cambodia election but also for the Vietnamese election. The CPP is able to do the same method and will collect most of the Vietnamese vote live in Cambodia. It means this system will gave the CPP a big advantage and the CPP already won the next election in Cambodia.

The CNRP should think carefully and only collect the Khmer live in the US or live in other countries without the US citizenship, but not the someone, who has a dual citizenships.

ចម្នេះនេះវានឹងអាចជិះកឯងមិនខាន៕

The political momentum in Cambodia and in America is encouraging. Not only in Cambodia and in America, in other countries the overseas Khmers have woken up and ready to support the opposition. Hun Sen was concerned that's why he warned the voters not to vote for the opposition.

Cambodia is waiting for Sam Rancy to return to Khmer. Vietnamese is waiting for Sam Rancy to die.

CPP are pro-Vietnam. They rather Sam Rancy to die or stay out of Cambodia.

Give CNRP party a chance to rule the country. Mr Sam Rainsy and his party are capable enough to make run the country. If you are Youn, I know you would feel uncomfortable with the Opposition Party but if you love Cambodia and dislike communism then vote for CNRP party. Guaranty you Cambodia will move towards democracy.

Before I went to Cambodia I tend to believe all these stories about 1 million, climbing to 2 millions, climbing to 3 million and suddenly boom to 7 of illegal viet settlers in Cambodia. In just 5 weeks I explored 70 per cent of Cambodia and I was having a hard time of finding the viets outside the mekong. Yes they live mainly near the mekong river on the way to vietnam and their numbers maybe in the hundreds thousands. You think an illegal viet can just come and stay, what a load of rubbish. Every property in Cambodia is owned by someone and there is no way you can just walk in and live anywhere in Cambodia unless you want to be a beggar.
