PHNOM PENH, 23 November 2012 (The Cambodia Herald) - A senior government official
dismissed the Sam Rainsy Party Youth Movement Friday for blaming Prime
Minister Hun Sen and Royal Palace Minister Kong Sam Ol for a stampede that killed 354 people two years ago.
Tith Sothea, a member of the Press and Quick Reaction Unit of the Office of Council Ministers, said it was "unreasonable" to demand that Hun Sen and Kong Sam Pol take responsibility for the incident.
"The stampede at Koh Pich in 2010 was a regrettable coincidence which the government has addressed with clear action to rescue victims and compensate families," he said.
"Complaining to the International Criminal Court is self-damaging to the opposition group since the opposition party leader has apologized and sent a letter to Prime Minister Hun Sen."
The comments came a day after Soung Sophorn, head of the opposition group, announced plans to file lawsuits next week against Hun Sen and Kong Sam Ol with the International Criminal Court and Phnom Penh Court.
