PHNOM PENH (AFP) — Police in Cambodia were called in on Monday to prevent a
riot at a factory whose Chinese manager angered 1,000 workers by
ripping up photos of recently deceased former king Norodom Sihanouk.
Police
handcuffed Wang Zia Cha, manager of the Top World factory in Phnom
Penh, and escorted her to the nearest makeshift shrine honouring
Sihanouk where she lit incense and knelt down as employees looked on.
"The
workers were very angry with her. If we hadn't stepped in on time, the
situation could have turned serious," said Phnom Penh police chief Chuon
Sovann.
Wang will remain in detention as authorities investigate
whether she broke the law, he said. Unlike neighbouring Thailand,
Cambodia does not have specific legislation against insulting the
monarchy.
The incident happened after some employees at the factory stopped work to gather around two pictures of Sihanouk.
"When
the Chinese lady saw the pictures, she grabbed them... she tried to
tear the photos, but she was unable to and she used scissors to cut
them," factory employee Sroy Phalla, 42, told AFP.
Top World said
staff had been given the day off after the "regretful" incident and Wang
had been removed from her role as chief of a production unit.
Sihanouk,
who steered Cambodia through decades marked by independence from
France, civil war, the murderous Khmer Rouge regime and finally peace,
died of a heart attack on October 15 aged 89.

It is a good start for our laws, our King and Cambodia people. Traditionally, most foreigners came to our country either to visit or to live there, they have shown us that they have no respect to our laws, King, and essentially to our people, and the perception out there for these foreigners.
Now, it is the perfect time that our authorities change that perception.
If she have known she won't have done what she done. What is the law was she breaks the law!? She didn't breaks the law.
We should not be too harsh with her because Cambodia did not have lese majeste law yet. Just make her apologize and release her. It's up to the company to decide whether to re-employ her not not.
Are we sure she is Chinese, and not Vietnamese? Just asking.
Yuon and chen are looking the same, because Yuon were sub-chen bandits from Mongolia long ago to steal Cham's land in the central of Srok Yuon and stole khmer's land in the south.Yuon were sub- chen, remember that!
We are glad to see the Khmerization Admin has taken down the Vietnamese blogger's comment because that Vietnamese blogger have insulted Khmer people in general with words "Dumb Khmer" in order to make the foreigners to look down on Khmer people instead of the most corrupted leaders coming from communist Vietcong who currently controlled blind leader Hun Sen, a Vietnamese puppet as an illegally Vietnamese installed PM of Cambodia.
The Vietnamese blogger with words "Dumb Khmer" to innocent and powerless Khmer folks who are unarmed, gentle, polite and civilized living under the oppressed and corrupted CPP leaders or officials who are mixed Yuon-Khmer, Yuon-Chinese and Yuon blood.
Thank you for taking down the very mean and insulting comments of Vietnamese blogger, Khmerization Admin.
