CREMORNE
is not the first place you would expect to find a house for a Cambodian
family of six, but that's where one is now standing.
The scaled-down house was built over two days by Year 11 students
from Redlands, to raise awareness for its Raise a Home for Cambodia
program. The program will see 50 students travel to Cambodia in the first
two weeks of their Christmas holidays.
While there, the students will work with three local charities to
build homes and provide help for more than 2500 Cambodian children who
live on the street.
Participating students are currently doing everything from
babysitting to car washing to raise the $750 they each are required to
personally fundraise toward the charities.
"Community contribution and global citizenship are a focus of a
Redlands education, and this is a way our students learn these values
first-hand," Redlands principal Peter Lennox said. "This mini-house
construction project, albeit temporary, will raise awareness."
