Puma has begun investigating a shooting at one of its suppliers' factories in Cambodia.
The company said today (21 February) that during a demonstration outside the premises of Kaoway Sports, which was not initiated by workers of the Kaoway Sports factory, three female Kaoway employees were shot.
Cambodian human rights group Licadho told the BBC that the victims were aged 18, 21, and 23. One of those shot recieved a chest wound and was seriously injuered.
A Puma official and representatives of Cambodian NGO CLEC are on their way to visit one injured employee who has been hospitalised in Phnom Penh.
According to local press reports, a police officer opened fire on protesters outside the Kaoway Sports factory in Bavet town, Svay Rieng province. According to the reports, more than 6,000 workers were throwing rocks at the factory in protest of unfair working conditions.
However, the police claim a gunman drove up to the workers and opened fire.
Puma told just-style that it will host several meetings with other non-governmental organisations on Tuesday and Wednesday to discuss solutions for the ongoing conflict so that the safety and well-being of the employees in its supplier factories is ensured.
Kaoway Sports has evacuated all staff from the compound to ensure their safety, and workers have been sent home. The factory will remain closed until further notice, said Puma.
