PHNOM PENH, December 28, 2011 (Cambodia Herald) -, French newspaper Le Figaro on Wednesday ranked the Song Saa (fiancee) resort located on a couple of private islands in the Koh Rong archipelago in Sihanoukville province as the world's top unconventional holiday destination for 2012.

"It's the hip hideaway everyone's talking about," the newspaper said, noting that it was only 30 minutes by speedboat from Sihanoukville and was an "ideal seaside extension" to a trip to the Angkor temples in Siem Reap.

The newspaper described the resort's 27 wooden villas on calm turquoise waters as "elegantly" decorated while the cuisine was "retro and organic" and the marine life "exceptional" with dugongs, green turtles and coral.

"It's a dream stopover that makes you think of Thailand 40 years ago and is unforgettable for romantic stays. The icing on the cake is that you can even get married in the neighboring Buddhist temple," Le Figaro said.

Seven-night stays with all meals were advertised at 5,300 euros ($6,900) a person including transfers and the return airfare from Paris with Air France.

Competing with Cambodia in the Top Ten Unconventional Holidays list were locations in Brazil, the Seychelles, Oman and Tanzania along with a 12-day VIP tour on a private jet to India, Vietnam, Hawaii, Las Vegas and Quebec and a two-week train tour of the Central Asian nations of Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

Completing the Top Ten were the locations in the South Georgia islands and Uruguay as well as he new Great Atlas of the World published by the European Union for those who prefer to stay at home.
