Phnom Penh - Three villagers died and five were in serious condition in hospital after drinking tainted rice wine, national media reported Monday.

Preliminary tests showed the three deceased villagers had been poisoned, said Chhorn Chhean, police director of medical examinations in the western province of Pursat.

'But we did not clearly identify what kind of poison was in the wine,' he told the Phnom Penh Post newspaper.

Two groups of people drank the wine Saturday and became sleepy and dizzy, the newspaper reported. All were taken to hospital, but three died on the way.

The authorities said they did not know how the wine came to be contaminated.

In October, at least 24 villagers in two provinces died from drinking rice wine that was found to contain high levels of methanol.
