KELOWNA, B.C. - A Kelowna, B.C., woman who became critically ill while doing humanitarian work in southeast Asia is expected to be flown to a Kelowna hospital sometime Monday.
Jackie Light was airlifted to Vancouver on the weekend, but remains in a coma after suffering a heart attack in Cambodia late last month.
The 53-year-old had spent the last two years working in war-ravaged Cambodian villages and was unaware that her B.C. medical coverage had lapsed.
Light's 22-year-old daughter, Stephanie, says it has already cost at least $100,000 to cover air ambulances to Thailand and Canada, as well as life-saving medical care in southeast Asia.
Light's sister and daughter are her only family and, together, have managed to raise about half the amount needed to pay the overseas bills.
They say the B.C. Health Ministry is reviewing Light's coverage, but in the meantime, the Jacqueline Light Trust Account has been set up at the CIBC bank, as the family appeals for donations to cover the bills and help with Light's future care. (CKQQ)
