CCHR Media Comment – Phnom Penh, 25 April 2011
The Cambodian Center for Human Rights (“CCHR”), a non-political, independent, non-governmental organization that works to promote and protect democracy and respect for human rights throughout the Kingdom of Cambodia, condemns the ongoing fighting in the area surrounding the Preah Vihear on the Cambodian-Thai border and calls for an internationally brokered and monitored peace deal between the countries.
The fighting at the border, which today entered its fourth day, is the second period of fighting this year. In May 2009 after a Thai attack resulted in the destruction of a village near the temple and damage to the temple itself, CCHR called upon the United Nations (“UN”) and the Association of South East Asian Nations (“ASEAN”) to intervene and meditate between the two sides. Two years on, the stand-off between the two nations is worse than ever and the human toll is rising, with as many as eleven soldiers killed and thousands of civilians displaced on either side of the border. As it is beyond any doubt that this issue cannot be resolved bilaterally, CCHR repeats our call for an international interlocutor to broker and monitor peace between the two countries.
Ou Virak, President of CCHR, commented:
“We have already seen eleven soldiers killed at the border and thousands of civilians have been displaced since the fighting has broken out again. This is the human cost of what appears to be a cynical political ploy on the part of both governments to satisfy nationalist sentiment. This most recent series of clashes is proof perfect that an international interlocutor is needed, both to broker a peace deal and to monitor it. The international community needs to stop flip flopping and to exert pressure on both sides to except international assistance to end this farce.”

Hey boy don't blames us we don't take Thai temples Thai want our temple don't u see it get the fact right u should condemn Thai but u don't we're the victims here u have to distinct criminal from the victims OK.
Please help Mr. OU Virak to correct his statement. The ongoing fighting is around Ta Moan and Ta Krabei temples, not Preah Vihear temple.
Mr. Extremely Shallow, thais invaded Khmers to gain nationalism at home, while Hun Sen redirected his anger to chase enemy out of Khmerland and made his opponents looked stupid. And you,you decided to side with Hun Sen opponent ?
Where is your moral obligation toward our soldiers?
Even though they are ex Khmer rouge soldiers and you are the victim of Khmer rouge in the past, please separate the issue then and now. Suppose Hun Sen did divert the media attention from the Evicted Land issue to border issue, still thai had created the problem in the first place.
Go back to US and study some more, get your Ph.D etc...You are really mixed up political interest and vital national interest man.
Local secondary school kid.
It is Ou Virak a Khmer why he make a silly comment without benefit to his motherland Hun Sen should kick Ou Virak black ass out from srok Khmer traitor .
if you look at Thai side Surin for example every thing he does benefit Thailand he think he work CCHR and he can loosen he mouth without thinking where he base we should kick him out
traitor .
We're the victim here did he know how to distinct victims from criminals he not worth of working for CCHR how he know what is right and what is wrong.
BUT sir the Thai are the one thats fucking cambodia up, dont equalise the situation, its good to have human rights but to much rights creates individualism which is not good for out society, at this time NATIONAL UNITY IS MORE IMPORTANT.
