Mr. Hang Chakra, the owner of the Sam Rainsy Party-affiliated Khmer Machas Srok newspaper who has just been released from jail for allegedly defaming Deputy PM Sok An, has said that he will relaunch his newspaper on 1st May, one month after it suspended publications, reports Cambodian Express News.
Mr. Hang Chakra was jailed in mid-2009 for publishing articles exposing alleged rampant corruption committed by officials working under Deputy PM Sok An. He was released on 13th April under a royal pardon. After his released he declared that he will relaunch his newspaper and vowed to take the same critical stance as before. "We will strengthen our morality and professionalism. But we will maintain the same stance in constructive criticism. We will talk about political issues and issues affecting our territorial integrity", he declared.
Mr. Hang Chakra said Khmer Machas Srok will be published six times a week and will sell at 1,500 riels (27 cents) per copy. Six journalists will be working on the day-to-day running of the newspaper.
Mr. Hang Chakra has expressed his gratitude to the king, journalist clubs, financial supporters and leaders of the Information Ministry for their concerns and for helping him and his family while he was in incarceration. A week ago, he had appealed for financial assistance to help fund the publications of his newspaper.
