Mr. Hang Chakra, the editor-in-chief of Khmer Machas Srok newspaper who had just been released from prison for defaming Deputy PM Sok An, is seeking financial help to relaunch his newspaper which has suspended its publications over a week ago due to financial difficulties, reports Free Press Magazine.
Taking the oppostunity to thank all those who have supported him and his family financially during his incarceration, Mr. Hang Chakra said he is now broke. "Now, we have no money, we need the generosity of people to continue our stance (of exposing corruption)", he said.
After his release, Mr. Hang Chakra has been accused by many people of changing side and defected to the ruling Cambodian People's Party. However, on Monday, he had told a group of officials from the opposition Sam Rainsy Party that he had not changed side and that he will continue his uncompromising stance of criticising the government for its abuses of power and corruption.
At presence, the opposition Sam Rainsy Party had only one newspaper on its side, down from 10 at its heights in the later 1990s and early 2000s.
