Chey Mongkol: I cannot sit idle when the Khmer language in Surin is dying

Mr. Chey Mongkol: "This is our pride to be born as Khmers.", seen here posing with with his children.

After I published an article titled "Khmer Surin pray to ancestors to help revive Khmer language in Surin" I received an email from Mr. Chey Mongkol as follow:

Dear Khmerization,

I have created a link to the pictures of the ritual performed on February 8th, 2009 at Phum Poh Kong, Srok Prasat, Khet Sren (Surin). I would also like to thank for your support. I have discovered that many people in Sren still look at Khmer in Cambodia as brothers and sisters because we are kin. http://picasaweb.google.co.th/khmersurin/The6thKhmerLanguageSchool#

For your information, the Khmer text reads:

"I wish to thank you for your interests and your efforts in helping our Khmer Literacy Project in Surin. The death of the Khmer language in Surin is a tragedy for all of us that can be compared to a separation between three brothers, ie: Kampuchea Kandal (Cambodia), Kampuchea Krom and Khmer Surin.

What will our ancestors think of us if we do not preserve (our identity), even though we are weaker than our neighbours?

I cannot sit idle and do nothing while our language is dying. I do not want to organise a funeral for the death of our language. We are currently organising a "prosperity ceremony" for our language. Even though we have shrunk, but don't forget that we still have our ancient temples that we can show to our children how strong our civilisation was in the past. How clever were our ancestors? This is our pride to be born as Khmers."

Dear Sir,
I am always sad to see our communty getting trouble. I have the feeling that all khmer are supporting your cause. How ever, there is little or nothing that will be done.

There is something wrong.
I thinks we are lacking trust each other. Untill now, we are 2 associations working hand by hand. And we wish to have more coming. Our job is to defend our identify when ever there is declaration of Indochina state. We will defend also in the court room. I promise to help you, when ever possible, but above all, we have to be united and trust each other. There shell have more communication and we can survise.

I wish you trust us and invite you to joint our community

Sincerly yours

Another comment through my email from Ben Nhem:

Lok Mongkol,

Have you contacted some international organisation like the Toyota Foundation, Rockerfella Foundation, etc ?

In the past I noted that these organisations provided some sort of funding to causes like this, or I am not too sure. If the project is to survive and sustain in the long term, it must have continuous funding, and this is very hard. Without the interest from the Khmer government, it is really hard. Cambodian political leadership does not have any courage on issue like this.

I am feeling disbturbed by your plight and plight of our Surin people as a whole.

dear mr. chey mongkol,

please continue your efforts !
i wish there were more khmers in thailand trying to preserve their language but most want to get rid of it and be thai.

i am european, my wife is a khmer buriram, our half-khmer son speaks khmer, and i want him to be proud to be khmer.

every khmer should be proud of his, her culture.
and the whole world should know about the amazing khmer culture.
