PHNOM PENH, 9th September 2013 (The Cambodia Herald) -- The Cambodian People's Party (CPP) was confirmed as the winner of Cambodia's parliamentary election, paving the way for Prime Minister Hun Sen to rule Cambodia for another five years.
The
official results of the election announced yesterday by the National
Election Committee (NEC) confirmed that the Cambodian People's Party won
68 seats while the Cambodian National Rescue Party (CNRP) led by
opposition leader Sam Rainsy won only 55 seats in the 123-seat National Assembly.
However
in the 2008 election the CPP had won 90 seats in a landslide victory,
while the opposition party had only received 29 seats.
CPP
yesterday issued a statement, saying it would protect the election
result and it was ready to form a new government with Hun Sen as the
Prime Minister.
Prime Minister Hun Sen's son Hun Many was elected as the youngest member of the National Assembly.
The NEC announced the election results even after the CNRP's mass protest, demanding they delay their announcement until the election irregularities are solved by an independent poll committee.
After the election results were announced, the CNRP also warned that they would hold a longer and bigger mass protest against the election results.
The
opposition also said they will boycott the opening of the new mandate
of the national assembly which will take place sometime this month.
