WASHINGTON
- The U.S. says Cambodia's decision to bar exiled opposition leader
Sam Rainsy from July elections calls into question the vote's
legitimacy.
State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Friday that the
U.S. was disappointed by the announcement from Cambodia's election
committee that Rainsy has been removed from the official voter list
because of criminal convictions that carry 12 years in prison.
She said "credible observers" believe the convictions have been politically motivated.
Rainsy, who lives in Paris, is widely viewed as the sole Cambodian
politician with the charisma and resources to present any real challenge
to Prime Minister Hun Sen, who has dominated since the mid-1980s.
Nuland said the exclusion of a leading opposition figure "calls into
question the legitimacy of the whole democratic process in Cambodia.

Cambodia’s National Election Committee has formally reaffirmed that
exiled opposition leader Sam Rainsy is ineligible to run for office or
vote in the country's upcoming elections.
NEC Secretary-General Tep Nitha told reporters Friday that the new opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party would be allowed to contest the parliamentary elections. But he said Rainsy would not be eligible because his name has been deleted from the national voter registry.
“Political compromise is different from technicality of voter registration, because we are under a different law," said Tep. "Political compromise is only for political issues.”
Rainsy faces a 12-year prison sentence if he returns to Cambodia, and the law does not allow persons convicted of a crime to participate in elections. He and his supporters have said the charges against him are politically motivated.
Friday's announcement was a setback to the opposition, which had hoped the political activist would be allowed to return to lead a coalition against the ruling party.

Dear All,
There is no democracy in Hun Sen's Jungles, only a make-beleif of such.
As long as the Viet colonization of Cambodia is still intact, the puppet regime must make political paybacks to its Masters. Thereby in the process, laws are broken, democracy and human rights are deprived.
A plausible solution would for the CNRP with the leadership of Dr. Sam Rainsy to :
1. Organize a worldwide protest every January 7th.
in front of Vietnamese embassies or consulates with mass media coverages to inform the international community of the Viet colonization
2. File a request with the UN ( through a sponsor member state if necessary ) for a sanction to be imposed on Vietnam and its key leaders.
To prosper and keep peace within, Vietnam like
Cambodia needs foreign monies and international supports.
Dr. Sam Rainsy can hit Vietnam where it hurts.
