Minister says about 100 mining companies licensed [If there are too many mining companies like this, why the government only collected $13 million in mining revenue in 4 years?]

Energy Minister Suy Sem speaks to reporters

PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) - Energy Minister Suy Sem said Thursday that about 100 companies had received mining licenses. [But only collected $13 million in revenue from 2008 to 2012].Speaking to reporters, he also said that only about one percent of mining projects in Cambodia were successful.

"After receiving their license, some companies have closed during exploration," he said.

The minister said mining was a "very difficult" sector which required much patience and capital investment.

The money is in Hun Sen's, Sok An's and Suy Sem's pockets. It's called Luy Teuk Te or "tea money", a euphemism for "bribery" or under the table money.
