PHNOM PENH (The Cambodia Herald) - Cambodian military alumni have held a meeting with officials and soldiers from Vietnam's Military Zone 7 in Ho Chi Minh City, the Vietnam News Agency reported.

The report said Vietnam's Deputy Defence Minister, Lieutenant-General Nguyen Chi Vinh, told Monday's meeting that Vietnam had helped Cambodia train tens of thousands of officers.

These included high-ranking officers now holding important positions in the Cambodian parliament, government and army, he said.

Vinh described the meeting as having "deep political and social meaning, constituting a proof of the solidarity, friendship and cooperation between the two peoples," the report said.

He also "expressed his belief that the relationship between the two sides, especially the younger generations of both countries, will be firmer and more practical and effective."

The report added that Military Zone 7 Commander Tran Don affirmed that the zone would work with the Cambodian Royal Armed Forces to strengthen cooperation activities.

"They will focus on education and training, border demarcation, building a border of peace and friendship as well as improving the living conditions of poor people living along the shared border," it said.

VNA said the Vietnam People’s Army had trained 12,000 officers for the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces.
