PHNOM PENH, 18 December 2012 (The Cambodia Herald) - The Czech Republic has agreed to
cancel Cambodia's debt of more than $3 million, a senior official said
Tuesday.
Ouch Borith, secretary of state at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, said the agreement came during a meeting with Vitezslav Gepl, the Czech ambassador to Cambodia who is based in Bangkok.
Gepl was quoted as saying that the debt, dating back to 1980, a year after liberation from the Khmer Rouge, would be transferred into development aid.
The former Czechoslovakia was among the countries that recognized the former People's Republic of Kampuchea, which became the State of Cambodia in 1989 and ultimately the Kingdom of Cambodia in 1993.
