Is the Current Cambodian Monarchy still Relevant to the Cambodian people?

The King and the King-Maker. Two of Cambodia's ancient and most revered institutions - the Monarchy and the Buddhist Clergy - have been effectively ostracized and transformed into no more than ceremonial vestiges and polite spectacles by the demands of the country's rapacious ruling brand of politics and political elite. Both present King Sihamoni and his late father and former King Sihanouk have been part hereditary and part fortuitous beneficiaries of the ingrained reverence and loyalty attached to these two traditional institutions. Everyone - Royals included - have understood and accepted the present futility and the hollow facade of the Monarchy in the veneer of its once pervasive, binding, ruling, protective and corrective influence; and yet this inward acknowledgement has not been enough to dissuade or sway them against their cynical private calculations and their unconfined hypocrisy in relations to the Cambodian people and their true, actual aspirations, which alone legitimise and underpin the Spirit of the Monarchy as such. The Cambodian Monarchy will therefore be "preserved" and violently "defended" against its perceived foes even, as long as this enforced docility and public futility remain - School of Vice [image reproduced]
Two young mourners pray for the soul of the deceased former Monarch outside the Royal Palace, Phnom Penh. Reverence towards traditional institutions and public symbols of authority is ingrained in the Khmer people - School of Vice [image: google]
The suffering of the people is the suffering of the King - Young victims of BKL forced eviction pleading for their King's intervention to no avail in front of the Royal Palace. Opinion by "Pissed Off"

The article is right. It is just a matter of time that the centuries-old Cambodian monarchy will turn into an irrelevance or even come to an end as it has started to die from within for some time and the royals of Cambodia including His majesty have nobody else to blame, but themselves.

Courage is antecedent to long-term vision which decides present action and present action brings about desired future. One has to be willing to die in order to live. Without courage we have started to die a shameful death from within.

King Sihamoni has chosen to have the existence of his monarchy defended not by the citizens of the country whom he claims to love and protect, but by the strongman of Cambodia who has recently professed again to defend it at all cost in front of the dead body of King Father Norodom Sihanouk.

His Majesty has lost the very powerful and irreplaceable connection to His subjects by refusing to speak up on the behalf of the poor people. They are the true defenders of the monarchy if the monarchy can show itself to be relevant in their lives!

Imagine what it would be like as far as the King's reputation goes, had His Majesty come out in strong protest of the filling in of the Boeung Kak natural lake and defended the rights of the poor by threatening to abdicate the throne if His concern of the environment and justice were not addressed by the government of PM Hun Sen.

Though His monarchy may be abolished by the CPP of Hun Sen as a result of His protest, it will live forever in the heart and mind of many Cambodians and history. He might even
win the respect of the CPP including PM Hun Sen as well. In addition, the CPP would have a lot to lose by allowing the abdication to proceed. The CPP may make a deal! It is too bad His Majesty has made it so easy for PM Hun Sen to reward his cronies at the expense of the majority of poor Cambodians.

Choosing to remain silent has kept the physical being of monarchy alive, but rid its body of its very meaningful soul that represents the purpose of its existence.

Is it too late now to act? It is rather late, but certainly not too late and His Majesty would have to decide for himself how He wants to be remembered. Perhaps He should not listen anymore to his useless royal advisors whose advices are not for His interests but certainly for theirs. After all, the recent Cambodian royals have not achieved or done anything much for the country anyway. They are unnecessary burdens for the country.

Those article wasn't silly, the writer said the truth about what was happening all events that happened during last king reign and this king reign recently for example king Sihanmoni refused to help the evictors the residents of Bouenk Kak while their parents were jailed unjustly.I'm talking about a little girls name Heng srey lack kneeled and cried front of deceased king.

How can you read an article and missed the points? The truth is hurting, but the truth also can set you free as well. Are you three truth seeker or flattering seeker? To be faired and justly avoid corruption, aviod bias we must seek to tell the truth whether the truth hurts or causes chaotic, but the truth must be told. The truth shall set you free, it doesn't matter what circumstances you are in,tell the TRUTH!...

The country like Cambodia is poor better off without King, because of King can't rules or make decision anyway regarding of territory integrity that lost to its neighbours countries around us.From Yiek yuon to Laos or Siam, perhaps the king has nothing to say about Heng Samrin's village that ceding to Yiek Yuon recently by Cpp Hun sen.

Why do we need a king? My personal opinion is we DO NOT need a king.We need the rules of laws for all to obey from the news born to old and grey, from top officials to homeless on the main street all should be protected by the rules of laws, prosecute all those whom breaks the laws without corrupt and favoritism.

The king suppose to be neutral but he wasn't NEUTRAL at all,he was Hun sen political's tool he has nothing to say if Hun sen asks him to sign the documents whether the documents were good, bad, ugly for his nation/his own people he'll sign anyway,Was that NEUTRAL to signed anything without regard of whether its right or wrong to please one man[Hun sen] only?

Kmenhwatt.

Hun Sen should marry one of his daughters to the King to form a blood alliance, thus connecting his family to the royal line. If he succeeds, he would accomplish what few had accomplished in the history of the world, in that, he has gone from a poor country boy, to become the most powerful figure in Cambodia, more powerful than the king himself, and with an established connection to the royal family, he could set out to slowly remove the Sihanouk family line and replace it with his own, his family will rule Cambodia forever. It will make for a legendary story, worthy of a blockbuster movie.

Why would you want Hun sen to do that for? Hun sen is more powerful than king already didn't you know that? Hun sen didn't needs the king to marry his daughter body! Hun sen alone rules Cambodia for thirty years he didn't needs useless king to marry his daughter.

The king wasn't interest in marrying any women,he is old and he was gay.You can marry him if you want to be famous. Are you pretty enough? You sound like encourage Hun sen to do Nepotism which was Hun sen had done to his families with his powerful top cronies corrupts officials all over Cambodia today.

Nonsense!!!!

in this modern era, royals are nothing more than P.R.

Cambodia royals are the worst. This family have not done anything for the country. I could go on and write a long paragraph about why, but as you can see, they got their ass stuck up so high that they actually saw sihanouk face in the moon. LOL.

Dear All,

Cambodia does not need monarchy.
Cambodia does not want Hun Sen.
Cambodia wants democracy.
Cambodia does need to get rid off
Yuon' s occupation.

Of course the monarchy is still relevant to the Cambodian people, otherwise we would not have seen more than one million people came out to the streets to pay respect to king Sihanouk's body last week.

Experiment with republicanism in the 1970s (Lon Nol and Khmer Rouge) and the 1980s (Heng Samrin and Hun Sen) was disastrous for Cambodia.

Republicanism may be good somewhere else, but in Cambodia it has been proven that it was and still is not better than monarchism, as I have said earlier.

When the general population is more educated and the political leaders are more mature politically, then we can think of republicanism. Fore now and in the foreseeable future, I still think that the monarchy is pretty much relevant to Cambodia and the Cambodian people, if politicians, like Hun Sen for example, do not meddle with the affairs of the Royal Palace- I mean let the king exercise his constitutional powers without coercion or threats from the PM.

I would like to say irrelevant to have a king in srok Khmer. But our country are built and found by our great kings and queens. Take out monarchy from srok Khmer is like running a bolddozer through Angkor Wat or preah vihear. Our culture and tradition foundation is monarchy and our histories were bonded by it. You see, monarchy is our morality and mentor keeper but not our laws or rulers. They are a figure to glamourize and look up to and to have some connections of our ancient empire. Without monarchy we Khmer will probably have nothing to hold on to. It is like most Khmer who live in foriegn country feel lost and confuse or frustrated of who they really are and in the process you are treated as aliens or fakers. Taking away our king or queen is a very dangerous proposition as a Khmer and srok Khmer cus our country are small and weak. Without our idol we Khmer young generation will be easily melible. It is like you are an adopted child or fatherless.

I disagree on the view above,China,Yiekcong, did just fine without king or queen. How do say to them!? Were they like fatherless/powerless nations? In fact they are powerful look at China or Yiek cong.Only the rules of laws can hold fabrics of the nation together not king or queen's power and the rules of laws must be enforced without exception.

I did not say to exclude laws. I am saying have kings that we can look up to. With rules of laws as our govern. We can have both king and rule of laws.

Anonymous said...

Any way too much laws can also bad. Ever heard they come to play our systems. To me they can play our systems but they can not play our culture or tradition. Yes they can depopulate our culture and tradition like Khmer krom. Yes yuon have no king that is why we need to separate and differentiate from them to distigiuse our differances. Make them adopt to what we rightfully have since Khmer are created. As you know.going republic is a USA or western ways of disconnecting our histories and at the same times injecting theirs. Either laws or religion is their ultimate goals to colonize and later their territory.so keep what we have and get better at it. To be republic we need bigger guns.
