Don’t call it a ‘coup’, premier [Hun Sen] says

Sam Rainsy Party spokesman Yim Sovann said the SRP considers the events of 1997 a coup led by CPP.

Prime Minister Hun Sen yesterday once again warned his one-time rivals and present party officials not to refer to the bloody factional clashes that took place in Phnom Penh over July 5-6, 1997, and left the Cambodian People’s Party with a stranglehold on power, as a coup.

Speaking to police officials at the Police Academy School in Kandal province’s Kean Svay district, the premier addressed audience members Serey Kosal, Ly Thuch and Keang Vang, who at the time were senior military officials in royalist party Funcinpec.

The three defected to the CPP after the 2008 elections.

“Do not accuse me of leading a coup,” said Hun Sen, adding that officials had to be careful of their comments because of the video evidence that CPP troops had taken at the time.

In 1997, troops loyal to then Second Prime Minister Hun Sen and First Prime Minister Prince Norodom Ranariddh, who led Funcinpec, engaged in a fierce street battle in Phnom Penh.

CPP troops emerged the victor, and Prince Norodom Ranariddh went into exile in France.

The Hun Sen-led CPP has won every subsequent election.

Deputy prime minister and secretary general of Funcinpec Nhek Bunchhay could not be reached for comment.

Sam Rainsy Party spokesman Yim Sovann said the SRP considers the events of 1997 a coup led by CPP.

If we were able to setup the time back, we all sure would love to have our country Cambodia leads by the former King Jayavarman the VII. But we just can't.
Better, we should look for the future and do the best for our country and our Khmer people.

Damn..take it easy brotherman 4:55 AM. I think what 6:54 PM saying is that Cambodia need a strong leader traits like that of King Jayavarman 7. I don't think conversion from Hinduism to Buddhism has much to do with the deteriation of Khmer Empire. Remember, King Jayavarman 7, was a Buddhist, yet he was considered to be Khmer greatest king. Khmer haven't had such strong leader like Jayavarman 7 since. Since his death in late 13th century, Khmer have been deteriating from an empire to a small country known as Cambodia. His sons and leaders after him, weren't living to his standard of legacy. Since then, Khmer enemies of Siem(Thai) and Youn(Viet) were able to have the upperhand and taking advantage of Khmer. Mainly, Vietnam is that one enemy that will make sure Cambodia will always run by a weak leader like Hun Sen. This way he's much easy to control and manipulate by Hanoi. If Cambodia has a strong leader, Hanoi will see it as conflicting with its interests in Indochina. Its ultimately goal is to takeover Indochina without making any noise that might alert the world. By using Hun Sen and such, Hanoi government can position certain leaders to make decision that will sway toward favoring Hanoi government. Over certain period of time, Indochina will be in Vietnam grasp.

Hypothetically speaking, if Cambodia becomes part of the new Indochina, we should make it clear that we want to be autonomous within Indochina. That means we should be able to have our own governor and keep our language and culture. This is the model they have in large countries like USA, India, etc.
If this ever happened, it will be a strongest nation in SEA.

I hope you are joking. Indochina is already happening, what we have seen is still in the early stage. What we know is that Millions of Vietnamese are spread out across Loas and Cambodia. We also know they are controlling majorities of companies and industries, legal and illegal. When Indochina is at the final stage, (300 years from today) every Khmer will speak Khmer as a second language, and every Khmer will be celebrating the Vietnam liberation and Vietnamese Culture. Like it or not, there will also be 2 groups of Khmer. Pro Khmer/CPP and Anti CPP.

Hey , Indochina is a region, that consist of Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. Vietnam want Cambodia and Laos to itself. If that is the case, Cambodia and Laos will be no more, just like Champa. This is Vietnam dream.

Champa was killed off and it was possible in the old world. In the new world, ethnic cleansing is possible in backward countries. If youn want to be civilized, they can't kill its people. If Indochina ever becomes a nation, Khmers will not disappear because we have strong culture and tradition. Heck, the youn might get a reversed inculturation. They will certainly adopt some of our tradition.

CPP will fall, democracy will rise. That's what happens with all dictatorships, it's about time.
Unfortunatly, many khmers do not know what real democracy is since they never had "elections" before Hun Sen. It's about education. It has happened for Germany, when in 1933 Hitler was elected just because people did not know yet freedom. Once you've tasted it, you can't let it go.
