SRP says French prosecutors to investigate 1997 grenade attack in Phnom Penh

Sam Rainsy, leader of the opposition Sam Rainsy Party, who was injured in the grenade attack in 1997.

Published: 28-Jan-12
PHNOM PENH (Cambodia Herald)- French prosecutors plan to investigate a grenade attack in front of National Assembly in 1997 which left 20 people dead, according to the opposition Sam Rainsy Party.

The party said the French court could summon Prime Minister Hun Sen and other senior officials to appear if it had enough evidence from America's Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which carried out its own investigation at the time.

Senior government officials did not comment on the announcement, which was made Friday.

PM was inhumane to order a hit like rha on his own peoples but why the U. S court didn't take this case when it own FBI already investigate ?

I am all for bringing the guilty to JUSTICE but please Mr. Sam Rainsy don't disturbed our country hard earn peace. Not perfect but it's a progress. Remember we still have the Thai thieves to deal with. I don't think anyone in Cambodia is as mean and tough enough to stand up to the Thai thieves.

Thai thieves, and also the Vietnamese thieves, don't forget the government thieves, steal from the nation. Oh don't forget the fake peace. Hun Sen can create war at anytime he wants. He will try to assassinate Sam Rainsy again as we all know in 1997.

Khmer understand international law better then they understand the definition of democratic country and democratic system or the traffic law and the rules of law. But they see only MONEY money and nothing but MONEY

11:17 AM I totally agreed with you. Viet the BIGGER THIEVES but right now they control every espect of all Khmer's Government Branches.

We are smaller in populations and economic. We can't afford to fight TWO ENEMIES on both sides of our borders at the same time. Viets kind a quiet down now because they got huge parts of our land.

Pray some way some how we have a real Khmer Leader to deal with this TWO ENEMIES.

Hun Sen has committed numerous human rights abuses like the killings of Funcinpec generals after the 1997 coup, killing Pisith Pilika, the 1997 grenade attack and so on, so he must be prosecuted.

What I worry is whether the French court has jurisdiction to prosecute the criminals who committed crimes outside of France. In this case, the victim, Sam Rainsy, is a French citizen, but the perpetrator, Hun Sen is a Cambodian citizen and he committed the crime in Cambodia, outside of France.

If the French court and the American court will convict Hun Sen, then I think Hun Sen has not much space to maneuver because he cannot travel overseas freely or he will be arrested.

Not about who big and small. These two enemies are on this planet as well so they cannot just do whatever they like. The most important is the Cambodian leader (like Hun Sen or King) stop serve the enemies and kill its own people.

Murder of opponents
Although he was never president, General Manuel Noriega served as Panama's de facto leader between 1983 to 1989.
Once a US ally, he was arrested by invading American troops in January 1990, amid allegations he had turned the Central American nation into a drug-trafficking hub.
He spent 20 years in prison in the US after being convicted there of the charges.
In 2010, he was extradited from the US to France, where he had been convicted in absentia of laundering money from Colombian drug gangs through a French bank to buy property in Paris.
He received a seven-year jail sentence from the French court.
In Panama itself, he faces three 20-year jail terms for crimes committed during his rule, including the murders of political opponents.
However, it remains unclear whether he will remain in prison, as Panama allows people aged 70 years and above to serve their sentences at home.

Confusing or manipulating of the information. We all knew so well, we can't use our dual citizenship to play games for our interest.
A clear definition, outside of Cambodia you are a white Khmer. But inside the country, you are just a Khmer and not a white. You should change your political strategy, because you did not have much time and the Khmer people are not stupid as you always believed.
Or go back to school and study more of the International law.
