The Cambodian Military Engineering Unit is building 15 bridges on a 7,900 metres long paved road to Ta Thav Pass, a contested border area located about 5 kilometres from Preah Vihear temple where Cambodian and Thai troops had clashed at least three times in the last two years.
Gen. Kheng Somedh, commander of the Military Engineering Unit, said on Monday that this road connects Highway 62 with Ta Thav Pass.
The general said that each bridge is at least 30 metres long and is constructed from a concrete material. At present, two bridges had been completed and the other 13 will soon start. He said the road is 10 metres wide and the 7 metres will be paved.
He said at the same time, a 1,350 metres long, 10 metres wide road leading up to Ta Thav Mountain has been 100% levelled with red gravels and will soon be paved with concrete. He said only 7 metres wide of the road will be paved. He added that many more border roads will be built in the near future under the orders from Prime Minister Hun Sen.
